Mindy Kaling Declines Reese Witherspoon's Matchmaking Attempts Prioritizing Motherhood
Despite Reese Witherspoon’s attempt to play matchmaker for Mindy Kaling, the multi-hyphenate star isn’t currently seeking a romantic partner.
“I steer clear of dating apps. Quite recently, Reese Witherspoon offered to introduce me to someone, and I didn’t even bother to check their identity,” the 46-year-old Kaling revealed in a Bustle interview, released on Tuesday, October 21. “I refrained from laughing outwardly because I adore her and appreciated her consideration, but I simply felt it wasn’t the right moment.”
Her amusement stemmed primarily from the thought of “styling my hair, applying makeup, and venturing out,” rather than any other factor.
“With three children under seven, the prospect of leaving them, especially given my frequent work travel, is challenging,” Kaling explained further. “I am quite content. I collaborate with many men and appreciate romance, yet it’s intriguing how all these elements can coexist, and you can still conclude, ‘I’m perfectly content as I am.’”

However, Kaling acknowledges the inherent irony of her stance.
“As a writer crafting narratives for women, I understand at some level that the ideal pursuit is someone kind, compassionate, and sincere, and that one ought to mature beyond the juvenile inclination for someone amusingly cynical,” she elaborated. “I have, in fact, penned this very storyline for young women, yet I haven’t internalized that wisdom personally.”
Kaling is a mother to three children: Katherine, aged 7; Spencer, 5; and Anne, who is 20 months old. She has kept details about their father private — leading many fans to conjecture that it might be her long-standing friend and former partner, B.J. Novak.
“The speculation doesn’t trouble me,” she informed Marie Claire in August 2022 regarding the whispers. “He serves as the godfather to both my children — and their bond is truly wonderful.”
She clarified that the conjectures had no bearing on her personal contentment.
“It hasn’t influenced my children or B.J. in any way,” Kaling further stated. “If that's what captures people’s interest, I am fine with it.”
