Minnie Driver says encounters with ex Matt Damon on the shore are cordial.

The relationship between Minnie Driver and her former partner Matt Damon remains cordial.

“I frequently encounter Matt and his wife on the shore, and I always enjoy catching up with them,” Driver, 55, stated in an interview with The Times of London published on Saturday, December 6. “We don't cross paths very often.”

Damon, 55, has been married to Luciana Barroso for nearly two decades, having tied the knot in 2005. He and Driver, his co-star and romantic interest in the film Good Will Hunting, had a well-publicized romance between 1997 and 1998.

During her discussion with The Times, Driver also mentioned that she admires Damon and his frequent collaborator, Ben Affleck.

“Their chemistry is so remarkable that Matt and Ben seem destined to have shared a past life,” Driver joked.

Driver, too, has moved forward from her relationship with Damon, and she is now romantically linked with filmmaker Addison O’Dea.

“He is my wonderful lifelong partner. I feel incredibly fortunate,” the British star expressed about O'Dea, before outlining her principles for a lasting romance: “Be empathetic, actively listen, recognize when they listen to you, and maintain an active intimate life.”

Despite the passage of time, Driver and Damon have maintained an amicable relationship.

“I actually saw Matt Damon on the beach, and I hadn't genuinely spoken to him since we filmed [Good Will Hunting],” Driver shared during a September 2021 appearance on the “Keep It!” podcast. “That happened last summer, and it was genuinely pleasant to see him, his children, and his wife; the encounter felt very mature and settled, which was comforting.”

Driver noted that her 2021 encounter with Damon was the first time they had shared the same location in two decades.

“It feels like a significant portion of youthful indiscretion defined our early relationship—it was both wonderful and highly public,” she continued on the podcast. “Therefore, it was pleasant to simply engage in a more mature conversation about general topics like the weather.”

While both ex-partners have moved on, Driver momentarily paused her successful career path to focus on raising her son, Henry, now 17 years old.

“I mostly halted my film career when Henry was younger because I wanted him to experience a standard childhood,” she told The Times. “I wanted him to have a typical upbringing, play soccer, and host friends for tea. I maintained that for eight years, during which I only took two TV roles and mostly spent time at the beach. Then, the COVID pandemic altered everything.”

The coronavirus pandemic prompted Driver, O’Dea, and Henry to relocate from California and return to the actress’ home country of England.

“The first couple of years after moving back were challenging, but now I truly enjoy it,” Driver commented.

Driver has also experienced a resurgence in her career, securing parts in the play Every Brilliant Thing and the Netflix shows Run Away and Emily in Paris.

“I accepted the role in Emily in Paris because it holds significant popularity, possesses clever writing, and serves as light entertainment during challenging periods,” Driver remarked about joining Lily Collins’ Netflix comedy, set to air its fifth season this month. “The current era is quite remarkable, and societal divides are widening significantly. The sheer delight my friends expressed when I mentioned my involvement in Emily in Paris highlighted how much pleasure it provides to a vast audience.”

Driver is set to portray Princess Jane, a friend of Sylvie (played by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), marking an unexpected reunion with Collins, 36.

“I've known Lily Collins since she was 11 because I collaborated with her father [Phil Collins] years ago on Tarzan,” Driver added, referencing Phil's contribution to the 1999 animated movie's soundtrack. “Lily is truly the ideal person to head up a production. She possesses strong character and leadership qualities.”
