Authorities have located a body on California’s Mount Whitney during the search for missing hiking YouTuber Joseph Brambila, who vanished in November.
“On November 12, 2025, the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a potential deceased person on Mt. Whitney,” the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office explained in a Monday, December 15, press statement. “The remote and dangerous location, combined with several subsequent storms, made recovery operations more difficult and demanded thorough planning and coordination over several weeks.”
The release, which was posted on Facebook, indicated that the “deceased individual was successfully retrieved” on Monday following “several helicopter-supported and ground-based operations.”
“Official identification is still pending confirmation by the Inyo County Coroner’s Office. We will provide additional details as they become available,” the statement continued. “While identification remains incomplete, we acknowledge the distress of this situation and convey our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

The release further stated, “The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office is aware of public knowledge regarding the reported missing person in the area. However, we advise against drawing conclusions until a positive identification is established.”
Brambila, who celebrated his 21st birthday just before his disappearance in November, was reported missing by his family after they lost contact with him. His friend Luis Buenrostro informed The Los Angeles Times that he last saw Brambila at Trail Crest in Mount Whitney, a location where the YouTuber had previously filmed content in June.
He has remained missing since he documented a YouTube video on the mountain in November, mentioning he would be taking a “shortcut” on his return journey, according to the news outlet.
The outlet also reported that Brambila had previously shared a video of himself sliding down Mount Whitney in June using the “glissade” technique — a method requiring an ice pick and a helmet. When Brambila revisited Mount Whitney on November 11, the outlet pointed out that weather conditions can shift unexpectedly.

A representative for the sheriff’s office told People in a statement on Wednesday, December 17, that Brambila’s family participated in the recovery process but did not view the body of the deceased. The family was informed about the clothing the individual was wearing, but “clothing alone is not considered a legally valid or definitive means of identification,” the spokesperson clarified.
Us Weekly contacted the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office for a response.
As the search for Brambila progressed, his girlfriend, Darlene Molina, shared with SFGate that he was a well-prepared hiker.
“He enjoys disconnecting from the digital world and spending quality time with himself in natural settings,” Molina told the outlet earlier this month. “He has shared with his friends that he typically turns off his phone during hikes but consistently records and speaks to himself for his vlogs.”
Molina emphasized that Brambila “wasn’t hesitant to change course if he encountered a situation he couldn’t manage,” recalling that he hiked halfway up Yosemite’s Half Dome before deciding to turn back. Molina added that she felt “powerless” during the search for Brambila.
