Nelly Faces Misdemeanor Assault Charge After Casino Altercation
Nelly refuted an accusation from a Missouri security guard who alleged the rapper pushed him, as exclusively revealed by Us Weekly.
According to the entertainer's representative, “Nelly was surprised to get a legal summons concerning an incident from two months prior, in which an overly aggressive guard obstructed his way and encroached on his personal area.”
The representative further stated, “Nelly gently moved him aside with very little physical contact and no injury. The casino management subsequently offered an apology and invited Nelly to return [to the casino].”
Prosecutors officially brought a misdemeanor assault charge against Nelly (whose real name is Cornell Haynes Jr.) on September 4.
This charge originates from an event on July 15, when the Missouri State Highway Patrol was called at 8:45 p.m. A security officer at the Ameristar Casino had contacted authorities regarding an altercation involving Nelly.
In the official report, the officer noted, “The security officer expressed his desire to pursue legal action and was en route to the Missouri Gaming Commission office to provide a formal statement.”
The report also specified, “The security guard sustained no injuries.”
According to the document, the security guard asserted he requested Nelly, 50, to present his player’s card at the gaming establishment. Nelly purportedly “replied that he lacked his card and continued to go inside.”
“The security officer positioned himself in front of [Nelly] to halt him and explain that this entry was restricted without a card,” court documents stated. “[Nelly] then pushed the security officer and gained access to the gaming area.” The report claimed Nelly pushed the guard “in the chest with his right hand, clenched into a fist, and proceeded through the turnstile.
Us acquired surveillance video footage showing Nelly and the guard engaged in an exchange. The footage seems to depict the guard approaching Nelly very closely just before Nelly enters the casino.

A court appearance is set for October.
A spokesperson for the St. Charles County Government prosecuting attorneys informed Us, “Mr. Haynes received a summons and is required to attend court.” They conveyed to Us that Nelly will need to report to jail for booking photos and fingerprinting but “will be released instantly.” The representative confirmed that no bail would be necessary.
Previously, in November 2024, prosecutors in Missouri declared they would not pursue charges against Nelly concerning an August 2024 incident at the Hollywood Casino located in St. Charles, Missouri.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol also responded to that 2024 occurrence.
According to various reports, casino police requested Nelly's identification. Upon running his license, authorities found he had outstanding warrants from an earlier traffic violation. He was subsequently released from detention after posting bail.
Nelly's attorney, Scott Rosenblum, asserted that the artist was “singled out by an … inappropriate officer" following his "winning multiple jackpots" at the gaming establishment.
“Rather than simply overseeing the payout of Mr. Haynes' winnings, this officer chose to unnecessarily conduct a warrant check,” the lawyer stated. “The officer told Mr. Haynes that a background investigation was required for players winning above a particular sum.”

Following the prosecutors' announcement that no charges would be filed against Nelly, Rosenblum issued a statement celebrating the favorable outcome.
He further noted, “As soon as Mr. Haynes was notified of the warrant for a No Proof of Insurance violation, this officer deemed it necessary to handcuff Mr. Haynes with his hands behind his back and escort him through the casino, visible to other guests.”
Rosenblum issued a statement which read, “My understanding is that [St. Louis County prosecuting attorney] Wesley Bell and his department examined all the relevant facts and, following an equitable and unbiased assessment of the proof, opted not to pursue legal action.”
Nelly wed vocalist Ashanti in December 2023. The pair welcomed their son, named Kareem Haynes, in July 2024.
