Nia Sanchez Defends Miss Mexico Amidst Miss Universe Controversy

Former Miss USA 2014 victor, Nia Sanchez, has shared her perspective on the Miss Universe controversy involving current Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch.

"I am immensely proud of her for speaking her mind," expressed Sanchez, 35, during the November 6th installment of her "Hold My Crown" podcast. "Many of these contestants are quite young, in their twenties, and despite their strength, it can be intimidating. When I competed for Miss Universe, my goal was to win, not to cause any trouble."

She elaborated, "My sole focus was to perform optimally. I can imagine that in her situation, I would feel compelled to voice my concerns, yet simultaneously be apprehensive about jeopardizing my prospects in the pageant."

It is reported that Bosch, 25, was involved in a heated disagreement with Thai pageant official Nawat Itsaragrisil during the recent Miss Universe sash event, where he reportedly referred to the model as a "dumb head."

"We hold you in high regard, and we expect the same courtesy in return," Bosch retorted. "I am here as an ambassador for my nation, and any issues you have with my organization are not my responsibility."

Itsaragrisil, 60, responded by instructing Bosch to pay attention rather than engage in an argument. Following this, Bosch exited the premises, joined by numerous other contestants showing their support.

"I'm pleased she voiced her perspective and clarified that her intention was not to show disrespect towards the Thai people or their culture," Sanchez commented. "Due to diverse cultural norms, such an action could be perceived as highly disrespectful … but her issue was solely with that individual. It wasn't about her personally; it was, 'He has a grievance with my organization, and I am striving to represent my country honorably.'"

The former The Valley participant suggested that Bosch "should not face repercussions" for her remarks or for adhering to her organization's directives.

"I'm relieved she chose to address her supporters," observed Sanchez's podcast co-host, ex-Miss California Meagan Tandy, on Thursday. "One cannot predict what version of events he might have presented, given that the contestants do not speak Thai. I believe this served as her chance to declare, 'Listen, before he shares his account, this is what transpired.' I applaud her for that, and it's wonderful she had the backing of so many others, as such a situation could feel incredibly isolating if faced alone."

Sanchez additionally speculated that the incident probably created a "difficult environment" for the remaining Miss Universe contestants.

"I truly hope they improve significantly going forward," Sanchez stated, recalling her own pageant experiences. "I always felt that everyone associated with the organization respected women. While I cannot know Nawat's true intentions, his manner of speaking to her … suggests a lack of respect for women. Perhaps he views it purely as a financial venture?"

She concluded, "The fundamental principle should be the respect and empowerment of women, and when that is absent, immediate and drastic change is imperative."

Regarding Itsaragrisil, he has since issued an apology for his offensive remarks towards Bosch.

"I am only human. I had no intention of acting in such a manner," Itsaragrisil stated during a press conference held on Wednesday, November 5. "I wish to seize this moment to address the incident. As a human being, I believe you must appreciate the immense pressure involved; I am human and sometimes I lose control. Furthermore, it was not my aim to cause harm to anyone."
