NTSB unaware of crash victim Cristina Grossu’s final text message.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has stated it was unaware that Cristina Grossu, wife of Greg Biffle, had sent a text message to her mother moments before their aircraft crashed.

“We are not aware of that at this time,” Michael Graham, 45th Member of the NTSB, declared during a press conference on Friday, December 19, in response to a reporter’s question about Grossu’s text communication.

“If anyone has information about a text or anything similar, please inform us via email, and we will contact you,” Graham continued. “The same applies to videos. If you possess a video, contact us, and we will provide instructions for submission.”

Cathy Grossu, Cristina’s mother, shared the final text message she received from her daughter with People after news of her death emerged on Thursday, December 18.

Cathy recounted, “She texted me from the plane, saying, ‘We’re in trouble.’ That was the last I heard from her.” She added, “We are devastated. We are heartbroken.”

NASCAR Driver Greg Biffle's Fatal Plane Crash: All Current Information

NASCAR icon Greg Biffle, along with his wife Cristina, their 5-year-old son Ryder, and Biffle’s teenage daughter, Emma, from a previous marriage, perished in a plane crash on Thursday. Family friend and fellow NASCAR driver Craig Wadsworth, pilot Dennis Dutton, and his son, Jack, were also on board the aircraft and died in the accident.

It was reported on Thursday that the aircraft crashed and ignited while returning to Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina. The plane was airborne for approximately 10 minutes before impact.

Cathy told People on Thursday that the family was on a joint “birthday trip.” She stated, “To witness the horrific way it ended, it’s just so incredibly difficult to bear. I cannot believe they are gone.”

Family members of the deceased have since released a public statement regarding the incident.

“We are devastated by the loss of our loved ones,” the statement began. “This tragedy has left all of our families heartbroken beyond measure.”

Biffle and Cristina were remembered as “devoted parents and active philanthropists whose lives centered around” both Ryder and Emma. The statement described Emma as “a wonderful human being with a kind soul who was loved by many” and Ryder as “an active, curious, and infinitely joyful” child.

The statement concluded, “Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives. We request privacy, compassion, and understanding as we mourn and begin to process this unimaginable loss. We are grateful for the kindness and support extended to our families during this incredibly difficult time.”

The NTSB press conference on Friday aimed to address lingering questions about the tragedy. While the investigation has only just begun, NTSB members urged witnesses to come forward with any potential information.

It appears that few details are ready for release at this time. Member Graham informed reporters on Friday that the identity of the pilot remains unclear.

“At this time, we have been unable to verify who was flying the airplane. We do know three of the occupants possessed pilot licenses, but we have been unable to verify this at this time,” he said. “That is one of the things we’re working on.”
