Parks and Recreation Actor Jonathan Joss Fatally Shot in Apparent Hate Crime

Jonathan Joss, known for his role in Parks and Recreation, passed away at 59 years old in June of 2025.

His spouse, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, announced the actor's passing through a Facebook message shortly after.

Jonathan Joss, my husband, and I were victims of a shooting incident as we collected mail at our previous San Antonio, Texas residence. That property had been destroyed by fire following more than two years of continuous threats from local individuals who vowed to torch it,” the message posted on Joss’ Facebook stated. “Despite our repeated reports of these threats to authorities, no action was taken.”

Kern de Gonzales claimed the event constituted a hate crime, citing the “blatantly homophobic” harassment he and Joss had endured.

What Date Did Jonathan Joss Pass Away?

Authorities verified Joss's death occurred on June 1, 2025, after what appeared to be a confrontation with an adjacent resident. Officers, responding to a gunfire report, found Joss “close to the road.” “Resuscitation efforts” were performed on site before his death was declared.

Kern de Gonzales stated in his Facebook post that during their visit to their previous home, they discovered “the skull” and harness of one of their dogs, leading to “intense emotional anguish” for both men.

“We started to shout and weep, overwhelmed by the distress of our discovery,” the statement proceeded. “As we were doing so, an individual came up to us. He began shouting aggressive, anti-gay insults.”

How Did Jonathan Joss Die?

Kern de Gonzales asserted that Joss was fatally shot by their alleged neighbor.

“Jonathan and I possessed no firearms. We posed no threat to anyone. We were in mourning. We stood close together,” the message conveyed. “Upon the man firing, Jonathan propelled me out of harm's way. He preserved my life.”

Kern de Gonzales concluded his communication with a note for Joss's supporters, whom he regarded “as kin.”

“My current priority is safeguarding Jonathan’s enduring impact and commemorating the existence we created as a couple,” the declaration finished. “If your preoccupation lies with how an individual processed trauma or the intensity of their voice when detailing injustice and official neglect, then your concern for my husband was never genuine. Jonathan rescued my life. I will uphold that fact. I will preserve his accomplishments.”

Is There an Ongoing Inquiry into Jonathan Joss’s Demise?

Initially, law enforcement stated they uncovered no evidence supporting Kern de Gonzales’ assertions that Joss’s passing stemmed from a hate crime.

“Our inquiry has yielded absolutely no proof suggesting Mr. Joss’s homicide was connected to his sexual identity,” the San Antonio Police Department informed People in an official release on June 3, 2025. “We approach such accusations with utmost seriousness and have comprehensively examined all pertinent details. Should any fresh evidence emerge, we will prosecute the alleged perpetrator appropriately.”

During a press briefing held two days subsequent, San Antonio Police Chief William P. McManus acknowledged that the earlier statement had been released prematurely.

“A declaration was put out by us the day following Jonathan Joss’ murder that was exceedingly, exceedingly, exceedingly premature. We ought not to have done so,” he conveyed to journalists. “It occurred much too early, prior to our acquisition of any substantive data. I accept full responsibility for that. We simply should not have acted in that manner. It was far too early in the investigative phase for such a pronouncement to be made.”

McManus assured the public that murder investigators are “persisting in following every clue in this investigation to guarantee a complete understanding of the circumstances culminating in the inexplicable killing of Mr. Joss.”

In November 2025, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez faced an indictment from a grand jury for a single charge of murder. Local news sources indicated that Ceja Alvarez had initially been apprehended in June on a first-degree murder accusation, subsequently posting a $200,000 bond for his release.
