Plaid King and Cane: Charles' New Portrait Unveiled in Scotland
A new official image of King Charles III, showing him in classic Scottish plaid and with a walking cane, was revealed by Princess Anne at the Scottish Parliament.
The picture of Charles, aged 76, was taken by photographer Millie Pilkington during his visit to Edinburgh in autumn 2024 for the Parliament's 25th anniversary festivities. This artwork, first shown on Friday, September 26, is destined to be displayed next to a likeness of his deceased mother, Queen Elizabeth II, which the Princess Royal, then 75, revealed back in 2011.
"It was an honor to receive Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal at the Scottish Parliament for the unveiling of this depiction of His Majesty The King," stated presiding officer Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP during the event, as reported by Hello! Magazine. "The artwork will be placed in the Parliament's Main Hall, greeting countless visitors who pass through our doors annually. It's a powerful visual that highlights His Majesty's devotion to Scotland and the fond bond he shares with the nation and its populace."
"Being requested to create an official likeness of His Majesty while in Scotland was a tremendous privilege," Pilkington commented further. "By utilizing the stunning scenery of Balmoral gardens and the Highlands, I was able to reflect The King’s warmth and deep connection to nature and Scotland."
His First Coronation Portrait of King Charles III Is Revealed
The artist behind this royal depiction is well-versed in photographing members of the monarchy. She previously photographed an anniversary picture of Charles and Queen Camilla in 2024 and has created portraits for numerous other royal family members.
Although Charles was absent from the ceremony, he is thought to be residing at Balmoral Castle following a Sky News report on Thursday indicating that Prince William was journeying to Scotland to visit him. The pair has been spending "meaningful time together" following a demanding schedule of public engagements for William, aged 43.
Charles' younger son, Prince Harry, is not currently alongside them, however, he had reconnected with his father earlier in September after a period of two years apart. Us Weekly disclosed that this reconciliation took place on September 10 at Clarence House in London and "was initiated by a personal letter sent by Harry to Charles earlier this year, conveying his wish to rebuild their relationship," as per an unnamed source.
They conversed for almost sixty minutes, "personally discussing their children and Charles' recent health developments." The source further stated that the encounter involved "embraces and emotional moments."
King Charles Participates in Trooping the Colour During His Cancer Treatment
In February 2024, Charles publicly disclosed that he was undergoing medical treatment for an unspecified form of cancer.
"While The King underwent a recent hospital intervention for a non-cancerous prostate condition, an additional area of concern was identified," a declaration from Buckingham Palace stated back then. "Further examinations subsequently confirmed the presence of cancer."
Despite his continued medical treatment, Charles provided an update on his well-being to well-wishers during an encounter with cancer patients at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital on September 3.
"I'm doing reasonably well," Charles remarked to a patient, who is fighting prostate cancer, as reported by Hello!.
"A significant challenge lies in detecting it... early enough," Charles communicated to him. "The positive aspect, I believe, is that they are constantly improving their methods for managing these conditions. The difficulty is that hope is always on the horizon. I apologize for that; it's quite exasperating."
