Portland father arrested in newborn's homicide case
Authorities in Portland, Oregon, have apprehended a 38-year-old male on suspicion of fatally assaulting his newborn child.
Arlo Darnielle-Arroyo was just 11 days old when he was transported to a local medical facility on May 4.
Due to concerns about possible mistreatment, hospital personnel notified law enforcement regarding the infant's condition.
Medical professionals described the baby's injuries as "suspicious," as detailed in a recent press release concerning the apprehension of Arlo's father, Felipe Arroyo, Jr.
The specific nature of the baby's injuries was not specified, though medical experts note that even minor shaking can result in severe, potentially fatal injuries to an infant.
Arlo passed away four days later, at 15 days old, on May 8. Medical examiners concluded the cause of death was homicide resulting from blunt force trauma.
However, investigators initially lacked sufficient evidence to take the father into custody.
Detectives spent several months gathering evidence against Arroyo, and a grand jury recently issued an indictment for the father.
Law enforcement officials revealed on Monday, December 8, that he had been arrested on three charges of felony murder.
Arroyo's apprehension was carried out by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, and he is presently detained at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
According to the official statement, Arroyo also confronts accusations of first-degree assault and criminal mistreatment.
Furthermore, authorities filed two counts of attempted coercion and witness tampering against him.
The press release did not elaborate on the reasoning behind these supplementary charges.
Should he be found guilty, Arroyo potentially faces a life sentence in prison.
