Prince Andrew Navigates A Life of Royal Surprises and Scandals

Prince Andrew is known for making choices that have often surprised both the monarchy and the wider public — such as his decision to wed Sarah Ferguson after a courtship of under twelve months.

The late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's second son is Andrew. In contrast to his older brother, King Charles III, Andrew has historically enjoyed greater autonomy in his royal duties, notably exemplified by his 1986 marriage proposal to Ferguson, which occurred prior to receiving the queen’s official consent.

Andrew's separation from Ferguson in 1992, which culminated in divorce, drew considerable attention, as dissolving a marriage was then largely unaccepted within royal society. Many years onward, Andrew generated even greater controversy in autumn 2019 due to his connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, along with allegations of sexual assault, which he steadfastly refuted.

During October 2025, Andrew declared his intention to relinquish his Duke of York title amidst the scandal, a decision approved by Charles. Subsequently, the king also divested his brother of his princely status.
