Prince Andrew's Rollercoaster Royal Ride: From Falklands Hero to Royal Exile

Prince Andrew's Rollercoaster Royal Ride: From Falklands Hero to Royal Exile

Among the four offspring of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Prince Andrew has arguably undergone the most dramatic peaks and valleys in his life.

In 2025, Andrew Lownie published a book titled Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, focusing on Andrew, which the BBC characterized as “a relentlessly critical depiction” of the royal, portraying him as “haughty, self-serving, and refusing to acknowledge his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.”

Although this information was probably distressing for the royal and his relatives, it is undeniable that Andrew has made several dubious choices during his lifetime.

These choices encompass maintaining an extended association with Epstein long after his 2008 conviction for sex trafficking, in addition to the alleged sexual assault of the late Virginia Guiffre. (Prince Andrew refuted claims that he assaulted Guiffre, who tragically passed away by suicide in April 2025, when she was a minor. They reached an out-of-court settlement in a 2021 civil lawsuit for an undisclosed sum. The royal has consistently asserted his innocence but officially relinquished his royal title in October 2025.)

Does Prince Andrew Still Perform Royal Duties? His Current Relationship with the Family

Continue reading for further details on Andrew’s fluctuating fortunes within the royal household.

His Standing Within the Royal Household

Andrew became part of the royal family on February 19, 1960, marking him as the first child born to a reigning queen or king. By all accounts, he experienced an upbringing typical for someone born into a monarchy. He eventually attended Scotland’s Gordonstoun boarding school, which both his elder brother King Charles III and his father, Prince Philip, also attended.

His Military Career

Andrew is a decorated veteran of the military, having dedicated over two decades to the British armed forces. As a child, he expressed a desire to become a helicopter pilot — an ambition he achieved after earning his wings in 1981.

Unlike the majority of his royal family members, Andrew experienced active combat during his military tenure. He flew numerous sorties during the April 1982 invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentina, ultimately retiring from the service in July 2001.

His Nuptials with Sarah Ferguson

Andrew and his former spouse Sarah Ferguson married in July 1986, after having cultivated a friendship that dated back to their childhood. Their marriage was widely celebrated, and the couple soon welcomed their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, in 1988 and 1990, respectively.

The couple announced their separation in 1992 and finalized their divorce in 1996. At the time, Ferguson’s aspiration for a career outside the royal family was reportedly a factor in their decision to part ways.

“I did not wish for a divorce but was compelled by circumstances. I wanted to pursue a career; it is not deemed proper for a princess of the royal house to engage in commercial activities, so Andrew and I decided to formalize our divorce to allow me to seek employment,” she later confided to Harper’s Bazaar.

It has since been suggested that infidelity also contributed to the couple’s decision to split, and according to a Daily Mail report, Lownie’s book alleges Andrew would sometimes engage in sexual encounters with “more than 10 [women] a day.”

His Association with Jeffrey Epstein

Andrew’s connection with the late Epstein, who was apprehended on federal charges of sex trafficking of minors and tragically died by suicide in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial, came to public attention in 2010, when photographs of the two men in New York City surfaced. Epstein served just under 13 months in custody after admitting guilt to state charges of soliciting prostitution and soliciting prostitution from a minor in 2008.

Royal observers and the media relentlessly pursued questions about the pair’s relationship, and in 2011, several outlets reported that Andrew frequently spent time at two of Epstein’s residences. Ferguson also once received a sum of $24,500 as a loan from Epstein, according to the same reports.

As a consequence of the friendship and the subsequent scrutiny, Andrew was compelled to resign from his role as trade envoy in 2011.

His Sexual Misconduct Allegations

A few years later, the late Guiffre accused Andrew of coercing her into sexual acts when she was underage. She claimed these incidents occurred at Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean, as well as in New York and London.

Although the palace initially dismissed the claims as “categorically untrue,” Guiffre’s accusations ignited a firestorm of public attention and intense scrutiny from which Andrew has not yet recovered. In 2019, he granted an interview to the BBC regarding his prolonged friendship with Epstein and Guiffre’s allegations, asserting he had “no memory” of being in a widely circulated photograph with the then-teenager.

His Evolving Royal Responsibilities

The BBC interview failed to improve Andrew’s situation, and he soon announced his decision to withdraw from royal duties.

“It has become evident to me over recent days that the circumstances surrounding my past association with Jeffrey Epstein have significantly interfered with my family’s work and the valuable endeavors of the many organizations and charities I am proud to support,” he stated at the time. “Therefore, I have requested Her Majesty’s permission to step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has granted it.”

His Lawsuit with Virginia Giuffre

Guiffre initiated a civil lawsuit against Andrew, alleging sexual abuse in August 2021. “Today my attorney filed suit against Prince Andrew for sexual abuse under the Child Victims Act. As the suit details, I was trafficked to him and sexually abused by him,” she declared in a statement at the time.

“I am holding Prince Andrew accountable for his actions towards me. The powerful and wealthy are not immune from responsibility for what they do. I hope that other victims will realize that it is possible to break the silence and fear, and to reclaim one’s life by speaking out and demanding justice,” she added.

Prince Andrew denies being a co-conspirator of Epstein or that Epstein trafficked girls to him,” his attorneys Andrew B. Brettler and Melissa Y. Lerner wrote in a statement at the time.

His Royal Privileges

Queen Elizabeth II divested Andrew of his royal honors, medals, and achievements in January 2022 as a consequence of the aforementioned allegations.

“With The Queen’s endorsement and consent, The Duke of York’s military affiliations and Royal patronages have been returned to The Queen,” Buckingham Palace announced at the time. “The Duke of York will continue to refrain from undertaking any public duties and is defending this case as a private individual.”

His Legal Settlement

Andrew ultimately resolved the lawsuit with Guiffre in February 2022 for an amount reportedly exceeding $16 million, though this figure has never been officially confirmed.

“Prince Andrew intends to make a significant charitable contribution to Ms. Giuffre’s organization dedicated to supporting victims’ rights. Prince Andrew has never aimed to disparage Ms. Giuffre’s character, and he acknowledges that she has suffered both as a recognized victim of abuse and due to unjust public attacks,” the pair’s lawyers stated at the time.

“It is widely known that Jeffrey Epstein trafficked numerous young girls over many years. Prince Andrew expresses regret for his association with Epstein, and commends the courage of Ms. Giuffre and other survivors in asserting themselves and others. He pledges to demonstrate his remorse for his connection to Epstein by backing efforts against the evils of sex trafficking and by assisting its victims,” the statement concluded.

Renouncing Royal Title

Prince Andrew’s ties to Epstein re-emerged in September 2025 when purported email exchanges between Andrew, Ferguson, and Epstein were published by various U.K. news outlets. In one email — dated 2011 — the prince allegedly conveyed concern for Epstein three years after the disgraced financier pleaded guilty to procuring a minor for prostitution and soliciting prostitution in 2008.

“I’m just as concerned for you! Do not worry about me!” the alleged email read. “It appears we are in this together and must overcome it. Otherwise, stay in close contact and we will play again soon!!!!”

Another purportedly leaked email from Ferguson in 2011 reportedly referred to Epstein as “a loyal, generous, and exceptional friend to me and my family.” This alleged message was dispatched several weeks after Ferguson had publicly distanced herself from Epstein.

In response to the newly surfaced emails, Ferguson’s spokesperson informed BBC News: “The duchess expressed her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago, and as always, her primary thoughts are with his victims. Like many others, she was deceived by his falsehoods. As soon as she became aware of the full scope of the allegations against him, she not only severed contact but publicly denounced him, to the extent that he subsequently threatened to sue her for defamation for linking him with pedophilia.”

Prince Andrew Through the Years: Royal Life, Scandals, Title Revocation and More

The controversy reached its peak in October 2025 when Andrew declared his intention to relinquish his royal title.

“Following discussions with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded that the persistent accusations against me divert attention from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” Andrew stated in a message to Us Weekly. “I have decided, as has always been my stance, to prioritize my duty to my family and country. I uphold my decision from five years ago to withdraw from public life.”

He concluded: “With His Majesty’s consent, we believe I must now take an additional step. I will therefore no longer employ my title or the honors that have been bestowed upon me. As I have previously affirmed, I strongly deny the accusations against me.”

Later that month, Us confirmed that Charles had commenced the “formal” process to revoke Andrew’s “styles, titles, and honors.”

Prince Andrew will now be recognized as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His tenancy at Royal Lodge has, until now, provided him with legal grounds to continue residing there,” Buckingham Palace conveyed in a statement to Us. “Formal notification has now been issued to surrender the lease, and he will relocate to alternative private accommodation. These sanctions are deemed necessary, despite the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.”

The statement proceeded, “Their Majesties wish to make it clear that their thoughts and deepest sympathies have always been, and will remain, with the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
