Prince Harry Compares Royal Drama to Downton Abbey in Witty Christmas Speech.
Prince Harry lightened the mood by making jokes about the internal dynamics of the royal family during a holiday gathering speech.
The Duke of Sussex, currently aged 41, made a witty comparison between the British aristocracy and the popular period drama Downton Abbey while speaking at the British-American Business Council’s yearly Christmas luncheon in Santa Monica, California, on Friday, December 5, as reported by People magazine.
“Individuals occasionally inquire whether my upbringing in the royal family resembled [show creator Julian Fellowes’] Downton Abbey,” he started. “Indeed, but only one of those scenarios features drama, intrigue, formal dinners [and] unions with Americans — and the other happens to be a television series.”
The prince was comically alluding to his 2018 nuptials with American actress Meghan Markle. They have two children together: Prince Archie, who is 6, and Princess Lilibet, who is 4.
Prince Harry's Evolving Relationship With the Royal Family Over Time
Harry has experienced significant internal family conflict, although he supposedly reconciled with his father, King Charles III, during a September trip to the U.K. Us Weekly stated then that “persistent strain” remained between Harry and his brother, Prince William, stemming from Harry’s “public statements, autobiography revelations, interviews, and critique of [William and wife Kate Middleton’s] positions.”
During his holiday speech, Harry delivered another humorous remark regarding President Donald Trump’s immigration stance, specifically when addressing the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico. The prince joked about his eagerness to welcome athletes from “across the Atlantic” upon their arrival in America, assuming they could navigate “customs clearance” and “bypass ICE scrutiny.”
Harry noted that his engagement with the British-American Business Council marked his initial “Christmas party” attendance in “some time,” subsequently shifting to a more serious reflection on his transition to life in the U.S. (Harry and Meghan, aged 44, relocated their family from Frogmore Cottage in the U.K. to Canada in early 2020 after relinquishing their roles as senior royals. They subsequently settled in California.)
“In my view, being British is less about your geographical location and more about your principles,” he concluded.
Referring to the July 4 holiday, Harry quipped: “This is a novel experience for me, commemorating freedom from Britain, and particularly, independence from my six-times great-grandfather.”
Harry experienced a hectic week, including a surprise guest appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in New York City on Wednesday, December 3. He interrupted host Stephen Colbert’s opening monologue while the comedian was jesting about the popularity of streaming Christmas films featuring royalty.
“My apologies, I genuinely mistook this for the tryout for The Gingerbread Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska,” Harry joked upon entering the stage.
Colbert acted surprised that Harry wished to feature in his own holiday film, although the host acknowledged that the proposed title “sounds marvelous.”
“Americans have a fascination with both Christmas movies and royalty, so it makes sense, doesn't it?” Harry responded.
Continuing the segment, Harry teased President Trump after Colbert challenged the idea that America “is obsessed with royalty.”
“Is that right? I was under the impression you had chosen a king,” Harry humorously countered, prompting Colbert to admit the prince “had a valid point.”
Will the Royal Family Visit America in 2026? Analyzing the Speculation
Beyond Harry’s public engagements, he and Meghan experienced a difficult period recently. Meghan’s brother, Thomas Markle Jr., verified to the Daily Mail on Friday that their father, Thomas Markle, required a below-the-knee amputation of his left leg following a fall in the Philippines.
“No alternative was available. The choice was between operating immediately to remove the leg or risking his death. It was a critical medical emergency,” Thomas Jr. elaborated.
A representative for the Duchess of Sussex subsequently confirmed to Us that she contacted her 81-year-old father after his operation.
“I can verify that she initiated contact with her father,” her representative stated on Friday.
