Prince Harry's Security Battle: A Six-Year Review

Following his departure from official royal duties in January 2020, Prince Harry has been navigating a complex situation regarding his family’s safety within the United Kingdom.

After relinquishing his publicly financed security detail upon relocating from England to California, Harry initiated a legal challenge in January 2022, seeking funding for his own family’s protection during trips to the U.K. (He and his wife, Meghan Markle, are parents to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.)

Prince Harry has faced an ongoing security concern since his birth, for his entire life. He maintains his position as sixth in line to the throne, completed two deployments in Afghanistan, and recently his family has been targeted by publicly known neo-Nazi and extremist threats,” a representative for the Duke of Sussex stated at the time. “Although his position within the royal establishment has evolved, his status as a royal family member has not. Nor has the danger to him and his family.”

He encountered another setback in February 2024 when the U.K.’s High Court decided that the British government is entitled to decide the extent of security provided to non-working royals when they visit the country.

In December 2025, reports emerged indicating that Harry’s security requirements will reportedly be evaluated again for the first time in six years.
