Prince William Opens Up on Parenting Choices, Kate's Health, and Kids' Phone Ban

Prince William offered candid insights into the challenges of being a parent — and explained why he and Princess Kate Middleton chose not to conceal her health struggle from their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

“Each family encounters unique difficulties and hurdles, and I believe the approach to managing these issues is highly personal,” William, aged 43, shared with a Brazilian media outlet during his recent visit abroad. “Our preference is to maintain open and frequent communication with our kids.”

William acknowledged that this approach to raising children has both “advantages” and “disadvantages” — particularly in the context of disclosing information about Kate’s cancer diagnosis in 2024.

“Occasionally, one might feel that too much information is being shared with the children, perhaps unnecessarily so,” he further stated. “However, more often than not, concealing information from them proves ineffective; therefore, by clarifying their emotions, the reasons behind events, and offering alternative perspectives on their feelings, it can help them grasp the broader context and feel more at ease, rather than becoming overly concerned about undisclosed matters.”

The Prince of Wales elaborated, “Frequently, more questions arise than can be readily answered. It’s perpetually a delicate equilibrium, a reality every parent understands. The challenge lies in determining the appropriate amount of information to convey. There exists no definitive guide for parenthood; one must simply navigate it as it comes. A degree of intuition is essential.”

Kate, who is also 43, disclosed in March 2024 that she had commenced chemotherapy following a diagnosis of an unspecified form of cancer. By September of that year, her course of treatment was finished. This past January, Kate confirmed that she had officially entered remission.

William also elaborated on his responsibilities as a father during the identical interview conducted in Brazil. He observed that Kate undertakes the majority of the parental workload.

“Organizing playdates, chauffeuring, attending sports events, matches, and spending time playing in the garden whenever feasible,” he listed. “Handling the school drop-off and pick-up on most days. While Catherine and I divide these tasks, she likely manages the predominant portion.”

William then elaborated on the topic of permitting their children to own mobile phones — a subject he initially addressed in an interview the previous month.

“It presents a significant challenge. Our children currently do not possess phones,” William stated further. “Upon George's transition to secondary education, he might be allowed one with restricted functionality. We communicate with him, clarifying our reasons for deeming it inappropriate at this stage.”

Expert Guidance on How Kate Middleton Might Discuss Her Cancer Journey with Her Children

William's apprehension regarding granting “unrestricted access” stems from the concern of children “encountering inappropriate content online.” Nevertheless, he and Kate are exploring options for “limited access” for their son, who is 12 years old.

“I believe it would be beneficial for communication,” he concluded.

William confirmed that he and Kate maintain strict adherence to their guidelines regarding phone usage, a point reinforced during an October appearance on Eugene Levy’s Apple TV+ series, The Reluctant Traveler.

“Louis is fond of the trampoline, showing a great enthusiasm for jumping, and indeed, Charlotte participates frequently too,” William shared. “From what I observe, they mostly just bounce continuously, often playfully sparring. Evidently, there’s a certain skill involved.”

He continued, “Charlotte also engages in netball and ballet, thus ensuring they are occupied with athletic activities and spending time outside is considerably vital. They are attempting to learn musical instruments; I am uncertain of our progress in that endeavor. George has a passion for football and hockey.”
