Ray J's Artistic Roots and Tumultuous Family Life Unpacked

Musician Ray J originates from a lineage rich with artists and performers, including his father and his sister, Brandy.

Ray J unveiled his debut single “Let It Go” in 1997, yet his family’s musical heritage stretches back to at least the 1970s, when his father Willie Norwood became a member of The Composers.

His mother, Sonja, has managed both Ray J and Brandy since the commencement of their respective music careers.

Princess Love, Ray J's wife, from whom he is currently separated, joined him in matrimony in 2016 to start their own family.

Their daughter Melody was born in 2018, followed by their son Epik in 2020.

After announcing their separation in May 2020, the couple has since initiated and withdrawn divorce proceedings on three additional occasions.

At present, their marriage remains legally intact.

The artist behind “One Wish” was taken into custody in November 2025, accused of brandishing a firearm at his separated wife during a dispute that occurred on Thanksgiving.

Allegedly, a livestream captured video of Ray J uttering, “Do you want to drive intoxicated? Do you want to drive intoxicated? Drive drunk. Drive drunk, Princess,” at which point Love interrupted with, “Ray, you just aimed a weapon–.”

Ray J also seemed to state, “Proceed, Princess, drive drunk. Go ahead.”

He continued, “Are you intending to take my children? You and your intoxicated cousin? Because you are both drunk at the alcoholics? Then take my children, go ahead. Who will be driving? Tony has also been consuming alcohol.”

Willie Norwood

Willie, Ray J's father, holds roles as a vocalist, coach, and educator.

According to information from Kovocals, Willie became a member of the vocal ensemble The Composers during the 1970s.

Following their performance as an opening act for Chaka Khan & Rufus, the group chose to relocate to Hollywood, where Willie resided with his family until he and his wife Sonja opted to return to Mississippi.

Willie later brought his family back to California to take on the role of a music minister and establish himself as a music instructor.

He organized Brandy’s inaugural tour and launched his personal album, Bout It, in 2001.

Additionally, Willie was featured in Brandy and Ray J’s reality television program, Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business.

This show was broadcast on VH1 for a total of two seasons, running from April 2010 until February 2011.

Sonja B. Norwood

Sonja has served as the manager for both Brandy and Ray J across their respective musical careers and holds the position of CEO for the family’s management enterprise, Norwood & Norwood.

Her website states that Sonja ended her employment at H&R Block prematurely to dedicate herself to her children's musical ambitions.

This decision enabled her to assist Brandy and Ray J with music contracts, support Brandy's ventures into music and beauty endorsements, and manage the Norwood Kids Foundation.

On her online platform, she reflects, “Navigating this industry in the `90s as a Black woman and a mother presented considerable challenges.”

“During my teaching, it is crucial for individuals to grasp the operational methods of the entertainment sector.

I value every positive and negative demeanor, the rejections and affirmations, the obstacles, and the deceit I encountered.

These experiences have shaped me into the accomplished business professional I am currently.

I have forged my own path – fearless, self-assured, and deeply committed to my identity and my capacity for impact.

I especially want aspiring mother-managers and women to recognize that with dedication to mastering their skills, understanding themselves thoroughly, setting clear boundaries, and prioritizing their faith – they can achieve boundless success.”

Brandy Norwood

Ray J’s elder sister, Brandy, is recognized globally for her talents as both a singer and an actress.

Her prominence began with a part in the ABC program Thea, broadcast between September 1983 and February 1984, though her pivotal career moment arrived with the launch of her debut self-titled album in September 1984.

In 1996, Brandy starred in Moesha, a show that quickly gained popularity following its premiere.

Her acting portfolio expanded with numerous other parts, such as in the 1997 film Cinderella.

Her subsequent album, Never Say Never, released in 1998, garnered Brandy broader recognition once the track “The Boy is Mine” ascended to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Brandy has maintained her acting and singing career in the subsequent years.

Sy’Rai Smith

The offspring of Brandy and producer Robert Smith is Sy’Rai.

Her initial foray into singing was on her mother’s 2020 album B7, and she subsequently put out her personal single, “On My Own,” in 2023.

She additionally hosts the podcast titled “I Shouldn’t Have Said That.”

Princess Love

Princess Love and Ray J exchanged vows in August 2016, and subsequently became parents to two children.

Their relationship has been marked by instability, with multiple divorce filings occurring (specifically in May 2020, September 2020, October 2021, and their latest in February 2024).

In a now-removed Instagram post from February 2024, Love stated, “Following extensive contemplation, dialogue, and guidance, we have reached the challenging conclusion that our individual journeys have diverged, making it most beneficial for both of us to separate.”

“We wish to assure you that this choice was made with careful thought, mutual respect, and consideration for one another’s welfare.

Even though our marital connection may be concluding, we are steadfast in our dedication to co-parenting our children and sustaining a constructive and encouraging family environment.”

Princess featured as a cast member during seasons 3 to 6 of Love & Hip Hop: Miami (which ran from 2014 to 2019) and regularly shares her culinary activities on Instagram.
