Real Housewives Behind Bars A Look at the Stars Who Have Faced Jail Time

Life as a Real Housewife can be tumultuous, often featuring on-screen confrontations, legal entanglements, and even arrests. Yet, only a select number of cast members from the various franchises have actually served time in custody for their indiscretions.

Jen Shah, from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, commenced a six-and-a-half-year incarceration in February 2023 after admitting guilt to her involvement in a telemarketing operation that defrauded hundreds of victims.

Meanwhile, Teresa Giudice of The Real Housewives of New Jersey spent nearly a year in prison after her participation in a federal fraud conspiracy. (Her former husband, Joe Giudice, also faced imprisonment for the offense, serving 41 months.)

In February 2025, Karen Huger, a cast member of The Real Housewives of Potomac, received a one-year jail sentence following a 2024 arrest for driving under the influence.

Just under a week before Thanksgiving 2025, reports emerged that Huger’s former castmate Mia Thornton was taken into custody on accusations of pilfering $11,000 worth of furniture.

Teresa Giudice

In 2014, Teresa and her then-husband, Joe, admitted their guilt to 41 counts of fraud, encompassing mail, wire, and bankruptcy fraud. She was imprisoned for 11 months after receiving a 15-month sentence for her part in the crimes. Joe, on the other hand, was sentenced to 41 months behind bars. (Joe also confessed to failing to pay approximately $200,000 in taxes.)

Upon finishing his sentence, Joe was placed into ICE custody in March 2019 and was subsequently deported back to his native Italy that October. He has since relocated to the Bahamas.

Kim Richards

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills personality was apprehended at the Beverly Hills Hotel in April 2015 and faced charges of public intoxication, trespassing, and resisting an officer, as confirmed by Us Weekly.

Four months later, Kim was arrested again for shoplifting from a Target store in San Fernando Valley, California. She was suspected of exiting the store with items valued at $600. She spent a night in jail and was charged with a misdemeanor. Kim entered a no contest plea for petty theft and also for resisting arrest. After being released on bail, Kim was hospitalized and later entered a rehabilitation facility in 2016.

Us reported in December 2017 that Kim successfully avoided jail time after completing the community service required for her April 2015 arrest. Her probation continued until September 2018.

Tinsley Mortimer

Tinsley was arrested in April 2016 before joining The Real Housewives of New York City. She was charged in Palm Beach, Florida, with trespassing at the residence of her ex-boyfriend Nico Fanjul, whom she had previously accused of abuse during their relationship.

Tinsley clarified in April 2017 that her arrest occurred after she attempted to retrieve her handbag from Nico’s home. According to the reality star, she and Nico had an argument, and law enforcement was summoned to the property. Although the charges were later dropped, Tinsley did spend several hours in jail.

“I feel like after something like getting a mugshot and having it plastered all over every paper and all over the Internet, I felt like I hit rock bottom a little bit,” Tinsley disclosed to Bravo’s Daily Dish in April 2017. “So I just felt like there was no hesitation to join the show. I was like, ‘What can go wrong at this point in my life?’ I’ve been arrested. I was in jail for three hours, I think now this is fine. I think I can handle the Real Housewives.”

Luann de Lesseps

Luann was taken into custody in December 2017 and faced charges of battery, trespassing, and disorderly intoxication in Palm Beach, Florida. She spent a night in jail — famously declaring to the Bravo cameras, “I’ve been traveling, I’ve been to prison” — before her release. The Real Housewives of New York City alumna accepted a plea agreement in August 2018 after completing two rounds of rehabilitation treatment.

Us confirmed in May 2019 that Luann admitted to drinking after her second rehab stay, following an alcohol test conducted in April 2019 by a New York probation officer. When Luann declined the “opportunity to immediately enroll in outpatient treatment” because her relapse occurred during her Countess and Friends cabaret tour, a judge ordered her back to jail for violating her probation.

Luann consented to a plea deal hours later, which included weekly phone sessions with her treating psychiatrist as well as monthly in-person sessions and carrying a “breathalyzer monitoring device” with her. After accepting the new probation conditions — which included taking an alcoholism medication prescribed by doctors — she was released from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.

Porsha Williams

The Real Housewives of Atlanta personality was arrested in July 2020, alongside 86 others, while protesting the death of Breonna Taylor in Louisville. (Taylor was fatally shot earlier that year when police entered her home with a no-knock warrant at the wrong address. She was 26.)

Williams was processed and held in jail without bond. Williams was charged with felony intimidating a participant in a legal process, disorderly conduct in the second degree, and criminal trespassing. The felony charge was subsequently dropped, and Williams did not serve any jail time.

Williams had previously been arrested in April 2014 when she surrendered to the Fulton County Sheriff. At that time, she was booked and released on a simple battery misdemeanor charge after an altercation with Kenya Moore during season 6 of RHOA. She paid $2,000 cash for her bail.

Jen Shah

Jen was apprehended in March 2021 along with her assistant Stuart Smith for their alleged involvement in a nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme. Jen and Stuart were booked on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud related to telemarketing and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star changed her plea from not guilty to guilty in July 2022, which reduced 20 years from her maximum prison sentence. She was sentenced in January 2023 to six and a half years in prison and five years of supervised release.

Jen’s prison sentence was further reduced for a second time in January 2025. According to Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate records, she is scheduled to be released in November 2026.

Karen Huger

Karen was involved in a car crash in March 2024, leading to charges of DUI and DWI, negligent driving of a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner endangering property, life, and person, as well as reckless driving of a vehicle. She was found guilty in December 2024 on all charges except for reckless driving.

In February 2025, she was sentenced to one year in jail, initially facing two years behind bars since it was not her first DUI offense. Karen’s official sentence is two years in jail with one year suspended, meaning she only has to serve one year. (She was subsequently released in September 2025.)

Mia Thornton

The former star of Real Housewives of Potomac was apprehended in Atlanta on November 19, 2025, according to jail documents reviewed by Us Weekly.

A police report seen by Us states that Mia allegedly stole furniture valued at over $11,000 from a condominium she had been renting in Atlanta. The items reportedly included radios, televisions, DVD players, and other possessions.

The former Bravo personality later tearfully acknowledged in bodycam footage that she was aware of an outstanding warrant for her arrest. (Us reached out to Mia for comment at the time of her apprehension.)

Wendy Osefo

The star of Real Housewives of Potomac and her husband, Eddie Osefo, were arrested and charged with fraud on October 9, 2025.

According to police, the couple claimed that designer handbags and jewelry were missing from their bedroom during a reported burglary in April 2024. However, Wendy was allegedly seen wearing one of the purportedly stolen diamond rings in a later social media post.

A police investigation determined that other items they claimed were stolen had been purchased and returned to their respective stores “where a full refund was provided prior to the alleged burglary.”

“The Osefos, alongside their legal team, look forward to their day in court,” a representative for the couple told Us one day after the arrest. “At this time, they respectfully ask for privacy as they focus on their family and the legal process ahead.”

One month later, Wendy addressed her legal difficulties while attending BravoCon 2025 in Las Vegas. “It’s an unfortunate situation, and right now I can’t say too much, but I will say when the time is right, I will share my story with everyone, and for now they’re just allegations, so we will continue to push forward,” she told attendees during a panel.
