Reese Witherspoon Honors Late Diane Ladd as 'Muse and Second Mother'

Reese Witherspoon paid a heartfelt homage to her friend Laura Dern’s departed mother, the esteemed Diane Ladd.

“Oh Diane! Such a magnificent soul, brimming with radiance, youthful imagination, and limitless concepts,” the 49-year-old Witherspoon posted on Instagram, accompanying her message with multiple pictures of Ladd. “A natural-born storyteller hailing from Mississippi, your resonant voice transformed every minor occasion into a cherished memory.”

Her online message featured an individual photograph of Ladd basking in the sun, along with images of the actress from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore alongside her daughter. Another picture depicted Witherspoon, Ladd, and the 58-year-old Dern enjoying time in each other's company. The star of Legally Blonde further revealed that she regarded Ladd as a maternal mentor.

“You served as my muse and my second mother,” she elaborated. “May your guiding spirits embrace you into a realm of affection and luminosity. Until our paths cross once more.”

Witherspoon and Dern's friendship began when they collaborated on the 2014 film Wild. Their bond deepened through the years as they consistently worked together, notably after co-starring in the series Big Little Lies with Nicole Kidman.

Dern verified to The Hollywood Reporter that Ladd passed away on Monday, November 3.

“My extraordinary idol and cherished maternal blessing, Diane Ladd, departed this morning with me at her side, within her residence in Ojai, [California],” the Jurassic Park actress stated in a press release. “She embodied the quintessential daughter, mother, grandmother, performer, creative, and compassionate soul that one might only encounter in dreams. We were fortunate to have her presence. She is now soaring with her celestial companions.”

The specific reason for her passing was not disclosed.

Ladd gained significant recognition for her cinematic performances in 1974's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, 1990's Wild at Heart, and 1991's Rambling Rose. Each of these three movies garnered Oscar nominations for Ladd. Her concluding cinematic works were Gigi & Nate and Isle of Hope, both launched in 2022.

Beyond her contributions to feature films, Ladd also appeared in the 1980 television series Alice, Enlightened from 2011 to 2013, and Hallmark’s Chesapeake Shores between 2016 and 2022.

Laura’s father, Bruce Dern, who was Ladd’s husband from 1960 to 1969, also honored her memory. (Besides Laura, Bruce and Ladd had another daughter, Diane, who tragically passed away at 18 months old in 1962 due to a drowning incident.)

“Diane was an extraordinary performer and, to me, somewhat of a ‘concealed gem’ until her encounter with David Lynch,” the 89-year-old Bruce shared in a statement to Us Weekly on Monday. “When Lynch cast her as Laura’s mother in Wild at Heart, it seemed the world finally recognized her exceptional talent. She provided immense worth as a long-standing board member of SAG, offering the authentic perspective of an actress.”

Bruce further mentioned that his former wife “experienced a fulfilling existence.”

“She perceived reality clearly. She was an excellent collaborator with her peers in acting. She possessed humor, wit, and charm,” he went on. “However, what matters most to me is that she was an amazing mother to our remarkable, gifted daughter. For this, I will eternally be indebted to her.”
