Reese Witherspoon Opens Up About Healing From Past Abusive Relationship and Building Herself Anew
Reese Witherspoon is opening up about moving on from a previous tumultuous relationship.
“I excelled at maintaining professionalism and fulfilling my responsibilities, but I lacked emotional maturity in my youth,” the 49-year-old Witherspoon shared during a Saturday, September 20, segment on The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast. “One can find themselves in incompatible relationships, occasionally without fully recognizing the underlying patterns at play.”
She further explained, “After escaping that situation, it required significant time for me to rebuild my sense of self. My confidence had suffered because I had internalized the hurtful comments made by that individual as truth. I needed to fundamentally alter my thought processes.”
In 2018, Witherspoon had previously disclosed that she had parted ways with a partner alleged to have been psychologically and verbally abusive. During her appearance on Saturday’s podcast, the star mentioned that, even after actively changing her perspective, she frequently experienced intense “insecurity” following the conclusion of that relationship.

“It required considerable effort over a long period to evolve into the person I am today,” Witherspoon stated on Saturday’s installment. “Navigating life as a public personality presents significant challenges. I feel immense empathy for individuals who lead public lives while attempting to preserve their privacy. It’s almost unachievable presently, as people often objectify you, photographing you as if you were an exhibit in a zoo rather than a human being with your family. This period was incredibly difficult, and striving to be a mother and shield my children also proved taxing.”
Witherspoon, choosing not to name her purported abusive former partner, is a mother to three children. She has a daughter, Ava, 26, and a son, Deacon, 21, from her previous marriage to Ryan Phillippe, in addition to a son, Tennessee, 13, with her former husband Jim Toth.
“I was so unaware of many things,” the Morning Show actress additionally confided to podcast host Lulu Garcia-Navarro regarding her early experience with motherhood. “Perhaps that innocence was beneficial, leading me to think, ‘I’ll just manage both having children and a career.’ I did encounter some individuals who warned me, ‘This will significantly impact your career.’ Certain roles became unavailable to me.”

She went on, “I was immediately compelled to find equilibrium between my family life and my profession, balancing being a mother with being an active performer. This made it even more daunting when Legally Blonde achieved such massive success. I wasn’t seeking roles, [but] opportunities were presented to me, and that heightened the apprehension because I wasn’t actively selecting or pursuing specific achievements. It became more about, ‘What will I decline?’”
Witherspoon became a mother to Ava in her early twenties, not long before taking on the iconic role of Elle Woods in the initial Legally Blonde film.
