Reiner Family Tragedy: Children Mourn Parents' Deaths, Son Faces Murder Charges

Michele Singer Reiner’s sisters, Suzanne and Martine, are providing comfort to Tracy, Jake and Romy as they grapple with the heartbreaking deaths of their mother and father.

“Tracy, Jake and Romy are currently facing an incredibly difficult loss, and they have numerous challenges to overcome while mourning,” a source shared with Us Weekly in an exclusive statement. “Michele’s sisters have been instrumental in offering support to the children during this time.”

Michele and her spouse, Rob Reiner, were parents to sons Jake, 34, and Nick, 32, and daughter Romy, 27. Rob also legally adopted daughter Tracy, 61, during his previous marriage to the late Penny Marshall.

The insider also noted that Michele had a very strong bond with her sisters, who are also experiencing grief. Despite their own sorrow, Suzanne and Martine have focused their attention on supporting Michele and Rob’s children as they navigate this challenging period.

“The wider community has rallied around the family, as Rob and Michele had a vast network of close acquaintances,” the source explained. “Everyone is eager to assist in any way possible. Rob and Michele were exceptionally generous individuals, often helping others in ways that weren’t publicly known.”

The news emerged on Sunday, December 14, that Rob and Michele were discovered deceased in their Brentwood residence, apparently from stab wounds. The couple passed away at the ages of 78 and 70, respectively.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a representative for the Reiner family stated on Sunday. “We are devastated by this unexpected loss, and we respectfully request privacy during this incredibly painful time.”

Rob and Michele’s official cause of death was determined to be “multiple penetrating injuries,” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Their deaths have been classified as a homicide.

On Monday, December 15, Us reported that Rob and Michele’s son Nick was taken into custody in relation to his parents’ murders and is being held without bail. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if found guilty.

Nick made his initial court appearance on Wednesday, December 17, accompanied by his attorney Alan Jackson, who previously represented Karen Read. Nick did not submit a plea, and his next court date is set for January 7, 2026.

Following the hearing, Jackson addressed reporters outside the courthouse.

“This is a profoundly tragic event that has impacted the Reiner family,” Jackson said. “We all extend our sympathies to the entire Reiner family. There are extremely complex and serious matters involved in this case that require careful and thorough investigation.”

Jake and Romy publicly addressed their grief over the loss of their parents on the same day.

“There are no words to adequately express the overwhelming pain we are feeling at this moment. The shocking and heartbreaking loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is an experience that no one should endure,” the siblings said in a statement. “They were more than just our parents; they were our closest friends.”

Jake and Romy continued, “We are thankful for the outpouring of sympathy, kindness, and support we have received from family, friends, and individuals from all walks of life. We now request respect and privacy, for speculation to be balanced with compassion and understanding, and for our parents to be remembered for the remarkable lives they led and the love they shared.”
