RHOP's Eddie Osefo Hires Bill Clinton's Ex-Lawyer for Insurance Fraud Charges

Eddie Osefo, a prominent figure from The Real Housewives of Potomac, has engaged the services of distinguished lawyer Joseph Murtha – known for his involvement in a significant legal matter concerning ex-President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky – to represent him in charges of alleged insurance fraud, an exclusive revelation from Us Weekly.

Attorney Murtha submitted legal paperwork on Friday, October 24, pertaining to the Bravo personality's criminal proceedings. As Us had earlier disclosed, Osefo and his spouse, Wendy Osefo, were taken into custody on October 9, facing accusations of insurance fraud, conspiring to commit insurance fraud, and providing inaccurate information to law enforcement.

Wendy, aged 41, submitted legal papers this week requesting her trial be conducted independently of any other accused parties, her husband among them. Furthermore, she sought the dismissal of all charges. Eddie, also 41, enlisted Murtha, a lawyer with considerable courtroom expertise.

His legal firm's website states that Murtha is an seasoned litigator possessing proficiency in both state and federal judicial systems.

He gained recognition for his involvement in two significant legal matters. He acted as legal counsel for Linda Tripp in a lawsuit where she faced accusations of illegality for recording discussions with Lewinsky, now 52, who was embroiled in a sensational affair with former President Clinton, now 79, during his presidency in 1995. All allegations against Tripp were subsequently withdrawn in 2000.

In another distinct case, Murtha defended William Porter, a police officer from Baltimore. Prosecutors brought manslaughter charges against Porter regarding the demise of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. Gray suffered deadly injuries while detained by police for alleged knife possession. He was transported to an emergency medical facility and pronounced deceased on April 19, 2015. His passing sparked public demonstrations and multiple inquiries into the incident. (Three officers were acquitted, charges were dismissed against two officers, and Porter's charges were dropped following a hung jury.)

Within his submission, Eddie requested that the prosecution disclose the identities of all prospective witnesses they intend to present to give evidence against him.

Eddie's legal representative moved for the complete dismissal of charges, citing irregularities within the indictment document. He further requested, mirroring Wendy's plea, that all gathered evidence be disallowed, contending it was obtained through an illegal search and seizure.

In his legal submission, Eddie additionally sought to have his trial conducted independently of any co-accused in the matter. He asserted that a denial of this appeal would “undoubtedly be detrimental to” his “entitlement to due process, and a blatant infringement of [his] constitutional and other statutory entitlements.”

As Us initially broke the story, the legal complications arose when Wendy and Eddie contacted authorities to report a break-in at their Maryland residence in April 2024. The couple claimed that during their holiday, an intruder entered their home and absconded with several valuable possessions.

Within the court records, prosecutors highlighted that law enforcement stated Wendy and Eddie’s surveillance cameras recorded no activity on the specific evening.

The television personalities face accusations of providing deceptive information to multiple insurance providers and falsely claiming items as pilfered when they had either returned or retained possession of said articles. According to court filings, prosecutors alleged that upon the couple's arrest, they were found with a minimum of 15 items they had previously reported as stolen.

Subsequently, a representative for the pair issued a statement regarding the circumstances.

“Dr. Wendy Osefo and her spouse, Edward Osefo, have returned to their residence securely with their family and are in positive spirits,” a spokesperson stated. “They appreciate the extensive display of worry and backing from acquaintances, admirers, and professional associates. The Osefos, supported by their legal counsel, anticipate their court appearance. Presently, they courteously request discretion as they prioritize their family and the forthcoming legal proceedings.”
