Royal Christmas Spirit Shines Bright Amidst Family Hopes and Health Challenges
The festive spirit is definitely descending upon the British monarchy. Inside Windsor Castle, a magnificent 20-foot Nordmann fir, sourced from Windsor Great Park, dazzles with countless lights in St George's Hall, complemented by a smaller, glittering tree in the Crimson Drawing Room. Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace boasts three impressive trees gracing the Marble Hall, with seasonal garlands elegantly draped along its stately staircase. And in Scotland, the Palace of Holyroodhouse's royal dining table features a charming display of candied fruits and natural greenery.
Arrangements are also progressing at Sandringham House, the scenic 20,000-acre Norfolk property where King Charles III and Queen Camilla will preside over this year's holiday celebrations. (Queen Elizabeth II initiated the Sandringham Christmas tradition in 1988, a multi-day event commencing on Christmas Eve and concluding with a Boxing Day hunt on December 26.) This reunion convenes prominent members of the royal family, most notably Prince William and Princess Kate, both 43, along with their children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. Previously, William disclosed that approximately 45 attendees were anticipated for the 2024 festivities.
Despite the merriment, an insider suggests a poignant undertone to this year's holiday season. Although Charles, 77, has seemed robust lately, he continues his cancer treatment; concurrently, this marks Kate's initial Christmas since revealing her cancer remission in January. “The festivities might have a melancholic feel,” the source comments, “but they will also be a moment of joy, particularly following Kate's positive health update.” The core message of Kate's Together at Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey – scheduled for broadcast in the U.K. on December 24 – revolves around joy and affection, a feeling the source expects to permeate the royal holiday. “Everyone is keen to cherish their time spent with each other.”
This Christmas marks a new beginning for Kate and William in their recently acquired home; the family of five moved from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge in late October. “[They are eager to build new traditions and memories in what they view as their permanent residence],” shares the primary source. Historically, they've enjoyed outings to a nearby tree farm, baking sweet treats, and watching festive movies (William once mentioned Elf as his top Christmas film in 2021). While they usually divide their Christmas celebrations between William's relatives and Kate's parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, they are content to be alongside Charles this year. (Another insider confirms the Middletons will be present with Kate and William at Sandringham.)
The children are full of festive excitement. William and Kate relocated to their new residence, Forest Lodge, in October. “Christmas is a beloved time for them,” the source observes, highlighting William and Kate's dedication to raising their children with a grounded perspective. “Their aim is a conventional Christmas, free of pretense, in contrast to what Charles might have experienced in his youth.” Kate's Together at Christmas carol service is slated for filming on December 5th, with performances anticipated from Kate Winslet, Hannah Waddingham and Chiwetel Ejiofor. “This is considered one of her most significant seasonal engagements,” states the secondary source. “She's looking forward to it.”
Charles, in the meantime, might appreciate some positivity after a challenging period. Last October, his younger sibling Andrew officially lost his royal designations due to his connections with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. (The erstwhile prince, 65, is now referred to as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.) Charles further removed him from his longstanding residence, the royal property in Windsor. “Official notification has been issued for him to vacate the lease, and he will relocate to different private lodgings,” Buckingham Palace announced.
Inside Princess Kate and Prince William’s Christmas Plans and Guest List
One month prior, the King and Prince Harry, 41, met personally in London (marking their first encounter in 19 months). While the father-son discussion showed some promise, the source indicates “no further progress has been made,” leaving Harry and William's relationship as distant as before. A secondary source informs Us that fresh doubts exist regarding “the possibility of restoring trust” following Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, 44, attending Kris Jenner’s star-studded 70th birthday celebration on November 8. “Their appearance as Hollywood personalities clashes with the typical conduct of the palace and royal family members,” the source remarks, further noting that a Christmas invitation from Charles to the Sussexes was consistently “improbable.”
Notwithstanding the various issues, Charles is intent on ensuring a special holiday period. “Charles values his responsibilities, yet he's also a devoted family man aware of the preciousness of his time,” states the primary source. “He desires a particularly meaningful Christmas, anticipating it might be his final one.” He intends to participate in the customary Christmas morning walk to St. Mary Magdalene Church and to pre-record his festive address, which will be broadcast that afternoon. (The previous year, 5 million people watched.) “Charles would let nothing prevent him from fulfilling these duties,” the source explains, mentioning the King's adherence to his late mother's principle that one “must be visible to be credible.” The source adds: “He will exceed all expectations and duties.” The secondary source indicates that Charles's inner circle is cautiously hopeful about his capacity: “His health is not optimal. They are managing it one day at a time.”
This year's roster of guests will show some alterations. Andrew (who was present in 2024 with his former spouse, Sarah Ferguson) has not received an invitation. “The family wishes to move past any negative aspects,” shares the primary source. His daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, are anticipated at the church service but might observe the remainder of the holiday with their spouses' families. Among other attendees are Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall, and her husband, Mike Tindall, alongside Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh.
Guests are slated to commence their arrival at Sandringham on Christmas Eve. Royal historian Marlene Koenig describes an afternoon tea featuring customary cakes, sandwiches, and Coronation Chicken (a British chicken dish served in curried mayonnaise), followed by an evening black-tie dinner and the exchange of presents. “The royal family favors humorous or modest presents,” states Koenig. (Omid Scobie's book Finding Freedom recounts Harry once giving his grandmother a shower cap emblazoned with, “Ain’t life a b,” and Princess Anne presenting her brother Charles with a leather toilet seat.) “It's a contest to see who can find the most amusing gift,” the secondary source reveals.
Following the church service (Koenig notes that Charles and Camilla, along with Kate, William, and their children, will head the procession from Sandringham House on Christmas morning), the family will return for aperitifs before lunch — “a highly traditional meal with turkey from a local butcher and all accompanying sides,” Koenig explains. Afterwards, it's time for the king's address and a buffet supper. “The spread might feature boar's head, ham, salmon, and a variety of side dishes,” Koenig shares, also mentioning that “the dessert section will showcase exquisite treats and Charbonnel et Walker chocolates.”
Even after a year marked by difficulties, the festive period retains a cheerful feeling of optimism. “While Charles's specific cancer type remains undisclosed, it appears his treatment enables him to maintain a regular lifestyle,” Koenig comments. His holiday desire is to spend meaningful time with his family. “Charles aims for a customary holiday gathering with all members of the royal family,” states the primary source. “Every family Christmas is cherished, but this year holds particular significance for him.”
