Rumer Willis Shares Poignant Update on Father Bruce Willis's Frontotemporal Dementia Battle

Rumer Willis has been sharing updates with the public regarding her father, Bruce Willis’ ongoing struggle with frontotemporal dementia.

The 37-year-old Rumer discussed her father's condition during a Q&A session on Instagram on Thursday, November 20, prompted by a fan's inquiry, “How’s your dad doing?”

“This is a question I get asked frequently, and I find it challenging to respond to, as the reality is that no one living with FTD is truly in a great state,” Rumer stated. “However, considering his condition with frontotemporal dementia, he is managing as well as can be expected, if that makes sense?”

Rumer went on to say, “My honest reply would be that I am incredibly joyful and thankful to still be able to embrace him. I cherish the fact that when I visit and hug him, regardless of his recognition of me, he can sense the affection I'm conveying, and I can feel his love in return. I still perceive a glimmer of his essence, and he is receptive to the love I offer.”

Rumer Willis Shares Thoughts on a 'Somber' Father's Day Amid Bruce Willis’ Health Challenges

The 70-year-old Bruce now resides in a separate residence, cared for by a dedicated 24/7 team, away from his immediate family. His spouse, Emma Heming Willis, and their daughters make frequent visits. (The star of Moonlighting has older daughters Rumer, 34-year-old Scout, and 31-year-old Tallulah, with former wife Demi Moore, and younger daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, with Heming Willis, 49.)

Heming Willis initially discussed her husband’s residential setup during an ABC television special broadcast in August, named Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey – A Diane Sawyer Special.

“Making this choice has been among the most difficult I’ve faced,” she stated during the program. “However, I was certain that above all, Bruce would desire this arrangement for our girls. He would want them to live in an environment better suited to their requirements, rather than his own.”

She expanded on this subject in her book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, which was published in September.

“Providing the girls with some distance from Bruce also aids in readying them for his eventual passing,” Heming Willis penned. “I am aware of how grim and unsettling that statement is, yet it represents the stark truth of the circumstances I must manage to safeguard our daughters to the fullest extent possible.”

Heming Willis shared details of how she informed Mabel and Evelyn that Bruce would be transitioning from their joint family residence to his private dwelling.

“‘We've reached a stage in Daddy's illness where his care requirements are evolving. His care must become more specific to his individual needs,’ I explained to them. ‘And you, in turn, deserve to live in a home that better suits your current needs,’” Heming Willis recounted. “‘Moreover, Daddy would wish for you to have playdates, sleepovers, and greater independence than has been possible here. That would truly delight him.’”

Heming Willis characterized Bruce’s new home as “a location where they could store personal items such as toys, art and craft materials, swimwear, pajamas, and games, and where they were welcome to visit and stay with him whenever they wished.”

Bruce’s family disclosed his initial diagnosis of aphasia, a disorder affecting language, in March 2022. The subsequent year, they made public that his condition had advanced to frontotemporal dementia, a degenerative brain illness that affects speech, conduct, and movement.
