Scarlett Johansson Stands Firm on Woody Allen Support Amidst Evolving Public Opinion
Scarlett Johansson maintains her endorsement of Woody Allen, regardless of public opinion.
Johansson, aged 41, looked back on her decision to support Allen, 90, in 2019 when he was confronted with sexual abuse allegations, stating in a Saturday, November 29 interview with The Telegraph that it's “difficult to discern” if her actions led to any repercussions.
“The precise ripple effect is always uncertain,” Johansson clarified, mentioning her lack of regret for openly sharing her personal interactions with Allen back then. “My mother consistently urged me to be authentic, [to understand] the importance of upholding integrity and defending one's convictions.”
The star of Jurassic World: Rebirth admitted, “Concurrently, I believe it's equally crucial to recognize when it isn't your moment to speak.”

Johansson elaborated, “I'm not implying you should suppress your voice. Rather, I mean there are moments when it's simply not your appropriate opportunity. And that's a realization I've gained increasingly with age.”
Allen, an esteemed filmmaker, became a contentious personality in Hollywood following accusations of sexually abusing former partner Mia Farrow’s daughter, Dylan Farrow, at the age of 7. Allen has refuted these claims, which initially surfaced in 1992 subsequent to his separation from Mia. (The erstwhile partners had been a couple between 1980 and 1992.)
Although Allen was never indicted for the purported misconduct, Dylan’s allegations have persistently shadowed his career. In 2014, she penned an open letter for The New York Times, recounting her alleged ordeal publicly for the inaugural time.
Half a decade subsequent, Johansson, who collaborated with Allen on Match Point in 2005, Scoop in 2006, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008, spoke out about the controversy.
“What are my sentiments regarding Woody Allen? I adore Woody,” she conveyed to The Hollywood Reporter in 2019. “I trust his account, and I would collaborate with him whenever the opportunity arises.”
Johansson disclosed that she and Allen engaged in “numerous discussions” concerning the allegations of sexual abuse against him.
“He communicates very candidly with me,” she stated. “He asserts his blamelessness, and I accept his word.”
Controversies of Sexual Misconduct in Hollywood
Allen has garnered backing from various performers throughout the years, notably the departed Diane Keaton and actor Sean Penn, who publicly advocated for him as recently as May. Dylan, currently 40, has consistently affirmed that Allen inflicted harm upon her during her childhood.
In February 2021, the controversy re-entered public discourse with the debut of HBO’s documentary series, Allen v. Farrow.
Subsequently that year, Paramount+ aired a CBS Sunday Morning interview featuring Allen discussing the dispute, where he reiterated his denial of the accusations.

“No action I ever took with Dylan throughout my life could be misinterpreted in such a way,” Allen stated during the interview, recorded in 2020. “I had never faced any accusations in my life. [Then] I'm suddenly supposed to arrive in the midst of a bitter custody battle at Mia's rural residence [with] a girl aged 7. It simply — at face value, I didn't believe it warranted any inquiry whatsoever.”
The filmmaker behind Annie Hall asserted that Mia, currently 80, instructed Dylan to claim molestation during the ex-couple's custody dispute.
“I am convinced she genuinely believes it,” Allen remarked concerning Dylan, who was his adopted daughter. “She was a decent child. I do not think she is fabricating the story. I don't think she is being untruthful. I believe she holds that conviction.”
