Sean Swayze, Brother of Late Patrick Swayze, Dies at 63

Sean Swayze, the younger brother of the late Patrick Swayze, has died. He was 63 years old.

Sean’s son, Jesse, confirmed to TMZ on Wednesday, January 7, that his father’s passing occurred late last month in Los Angeles.

A death certificate obtained by the outlet revealed that Sean experienced a severe upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage and critical metabolic acidosis resulting from cirrhosis of the liver, which, according to the Cleveland Clinic, is frequently linked to excessive alcohol consumption.

In addition to Jesse, Sean is remembered by his children, Cassie and Kyle, as well as his brother Don Swayze.

One of Sean’s relatives, Rachel Leon, has since shared a heartfelt tribute to his memory.

“It is with deep sadness that I share the news of my cousin Sean Swayze’s passing today. This is a photograph he took recently for us to promote a Dirty Dancing-themed crawfish event,” Leon wrote via Instagram in December 2025. “My daughter, a marketing professional, conceived this idea to honor our beloved cousin, Patrick Swayze. We sent the shirts to Sean, who proudly wore them for us. He was always lively and full of joy.”

Leon continued, “Just recently, we were discussing his potential visit to Texas to spend time with us, and I was truly looking forward to it. Our thoughts and prayers are with his brother Don Swayze and [Sean’s] children. We are earnestly praying for the entire family during this challenging time. Please know that we care for you and are always here to support you. Sean, I love you dearly, and we will miss you greatly.”

Patrick was a celebrated actor, most famously known for his leading roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost. He died in September 2009 at the age of 54 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

“Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with his family by his side after confronting the difficulties of his illness for the past 20 months,” the actor’s representative told Us Weekly at the time.

Patrick had received a cancer diagnosis less than a year prior.

“I am fortunate to be among those with pancreatic cancer who are responding positively to treatment,” Patrick stated in a March 2009 announcement. “There is a brand new, 12-week-old, Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy named Kumasai in my life, who is beautiful and already demonstrating that he will be a very special dog. I have so much to be grateful for at this time.”

The following month, Patrick’s Ghost co-star Whoopi Goldberg told Us Weekly that he was “doing remarkably well.”

“He’s doing wonderfully,” Goldberg, now 70, exclusively told Us in April 2009. “He’s ill, and he, like all of us, doesn’t know when it will happen – because it inevitably will, that he will depart – but he doesn’t know when or where. His approach is, ‘Why wait for it?’ So he’s incredibly busy.”

Patrick is survived by his wife, Lisa Niemi, and his siblings. In addition to Sean and Don, the brothers also have an adopted sister named Bambi. The Swayzes’ parents, Patsy and Jesse Wayne Swayze, have both passed away.
