Selena Killer Yolanda Saldivar Denied Parole Again
Yolanda Saldívar received a life sentence for the 1995 fatal shooting of her former confidante, pop sensation Selena Quintanilla.
Once the head of Quintanilla’s fan club, Saldívar’s relationship with the acclaimed “I Could Fall in Love” vocalist deteriorated in early 1995. Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, along with their business associates, reportedly uncovered that Saldívar had embezzled thousands of dollars from both the fan club and the family’s boutique in Corpus Christi, Texas.
This conflict culminated in a fatal encounter between the two women on March 31, 1995, when Saldívar shot Selena inside her hotel room. Saldívar was indicted on first-degree murder charges and, despite her insistence that the shooting was accidental, was found guilty in October 1995.
The existence and tragic demise of “The Queen of Tejano Music” are explored in Netflix’s 2025 documentary Selena y Los Dinos, co-produced by her siblings Suzette Quintanilla and A.B. Quintanilla III.

Who Is Yolanda Saldivar?
Yolanda Saldívar was born in San Antonio, Texas, on September 19, 1960.
As a lifelong enthusiast of country music, Saldívar developed an interest in Tejano music after attending a Selena Quintanilla concert. She successfully persuaded Selena and her father, Abraham Quintanilla, to permit her to establish a fan club for the artist.
The fan club proved so successful that the Quintanillas employed Saldívar to oversee their Corpus Christi, Texas, boutique, Selena Etc, in 1994.
By early 1995, Saldívar was removed from her role as president of Selena’s fan club and dismissed from the boutique after the Quintanillas discovered she had misappropriated thousands of dollars from both ventures.
Saldívar was determined to regain Selena’s favor, though concurrently, she developed a dangerous obsession with her.
In the days leading up to the shooting, Saldívar acquired a Taurus Model 85 .38-caliber revolver from A Place to Shoot, a gun range in San Antonio. She subsequently returned the firearm before purchasing it a second time.
On March 30, 1995, Saldívar checked into the Days Inn in Corpus Christi. From her hotel room, she contacted Selena, alleging she had been raped.
Selena agreed to meet Saldívar in her hotel room so her former friend could hand over vital financial records. After this meeting, Selena realized that Saldívar had not provided the correct forms.
The singer consented to another meeting with Saldívar on March 31, 1995, to retrieve the appropriate documents. At this second meeting, Selena agreed to drive Saldívar to Doctors Regional Hospital for a rape examination — though the pair were later informed that the examination would need to take place elsewhere.
Upon their return to the Days Inn motel, Saldívar was once again asked to surrender financial records. Saldívar then pulled out her revolver and shot Selena in her lower right shoulder.
A severely injured Selena fled the hotel room to seek medical assistance. Selena was rushed to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital but was pronounced deceased around 1:05 p.m. local time.
Was Yolanda Saldivar Convicted of Killing Selena Quintanilla?
Indeed, Saldívar was found guilty of first-degree murder in October 1995.
Saldívar initially attempted to escape the Days Inn parking lot after the shooting on March 31, 1995, but law enforcement quickly arrived at the scene. Saldívar refused to surrender, engaging federal agents in a nearly 10-hour standoff.
When she was finally apprehended, Saldívar was charged with first-degree murder. Saldívar pleaded not guilty, asserting the shooting was accidental and claiming she intended to take her own life, not Selena’s.
Saldívar was convicted in October 1995 and sentenced to life imprisonment. She was granted the opportunity to seek parole after 30 years in custody.
Will Yolanda Saldivar Get Out of Prison?
As of November 2025, Saldívar has not been released from incarceration. Saldívar has served her sentence at a women’s correctional facility in Gatesville, Texas.
Us Weekly confirmed in December 2024 that Saldívar formally sought parole as the 30th anniversary of her imprisonment approached. An official from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice informed the New York Post that Saldívar maintained a clean record leading into the parole proceedings.
In March 2025, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles confirmed via a statement obtained by Us that Saldívar’s request for parole was denied following a review by “a parole panel of three.” The statement clarified that the parole decision was made after examining “court documents, offense reports, support/protest information, criminal history, institutional adjustment and information/statements provided by the offender.”
“It was the parole panel’s determination to deny parole to Yolanda Saldívar and set her next parole review for March 2030,” the board affirmed.

Selena’s family released a statement expressing their “gratitude” that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles opted against releasing Saldívar.
“While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon,” the Quintanillas stated via Instagram. “Selena’s legacy is one of love, music, and inspiration. She lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and her spirit.”
Their statement continued, “As her family and loved ones, we remain committed to preserving her memory and ensuring that her story is honored with the dignity and respect it deserves. We thank Selena’s fans for their unwavering support throughout the years. Your love has been a source of strength and healing. We will continue to celebrate Selena’s life – not the tragedy that took her from us — and we ask that all who cherish her do the same.”
Saldívar remains imprisoned as of the time of publication.
What Has Yolanda Saldivar Said About Shooting Selena Quintanilla?
Saldívar has consistently maintained that she did not intend to kill Selena.
“[The media] portrayed me as a monster, and I simply want to state, I did not murder Selena,” Saldívar asserted in a 1995 interview with 20/20. “It was an accident, and my conscience is clear.”
In 2024, Saldívar gave an interview for Oxygen’s documentary Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them, where she reiterated that the shooting was unintentional. She also claimed to have protected Selena from her father, Abraham, whom she accused of attempting to control the artist’s personal and professional life.
“He desired to regulate her time. He desired to dictate her whereabouts,” she alleged. “[Selena] was not going to tolerate any of that.”
Saldívar claimed that Abraham pressured her to secretly divulge details about Selena’s daily activities to him.
“I could not tell him because I was more devoted to her than him,” Abraham said. “When I refused [to tell him], anger started to be directed my way.”
Abraham criticized the documentary in a statement to TMZ, wherein he refuted the allegations and suggested that Saldívar’s new assertions were entirely fabricated.
