Selena y Los Dinos Netflix Documentary Exposes Autopsy Revelations in Tragic Murder
The upcoming 2025 Netflix documentary, Selena y Los Dinos, delves into the tragic killing of music star Selena Quintanilla, perpetrated by her erstwhile confidante and business partner, Yolanda Saldívar.
At just 23, Quintanilla, celebrated as the "Queen of Tejano Music," met her untimely demise in March 1995, shot in Corpus Christi, Texas. Saldívar, who had been a loyal friend and led Quintanilla's fan club, faced allegations of defrauding the singer's ventures of tens of thousands of dollars several months prior to the fatal incident.
Due to widespread public grief and demand after Quintanilla’s passing, medical officials in Nueces County, Texas, consented to perform an autopsy a mere three hours post-mortem. The official coroner’s findings ultimately classified Quintanilla’s demise as a homicide, even though Saldívar asserted it was an unintentional shooting.
The autopsy report provided compelling insights into Quintanilla’s last encounter with Saldívar, a meeting where their disputes escalated into a fatal act.

What Motivated Yolanda Saldívar to Kill Selena?
Yolanda Saldívar began as a mere admirer of Selena Quintanilla. After attending a Selena concert, she subsequently persuaded the singer’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, to allow her to establish a fan club in San Antonio, Texas.
Saldívar cultivated a strong bond with Quintanilla as her fan club flourished. In 1994, she secured a managerial position at the family's Selena Etc boutique located in Corpus Christi.
By early 1995, her personal and working relationship with the Quintanilla family deteriorated upon their discovery that Saldívar had siphoned off substantial funds from both the fan club and the clothing store. Consequently, Saldívar was terminated from the boutique and removed from her role as president of Selena’s fan club in March 1995.
Weeks before the homicide, Saldívar acquired and then returned a Taurus Model 85 .38-caliber revolver from A Place to Shoot, a gun range in San Antonio. (Saldívar subsequently bought the firearm again just prior to the fatal event.)

On March 30, Saldívar checked into the Days Inn motel, from where she reached out to Selena, alleging she had been assaulted. Saldívar reportedly pleaded with Selena to meet her privately in her room, ostensibly to hand over financial documents.
That same day, Selena arrived for the meeting accompanied by her husband, Chris Pérez, disregarding Saldívar’s insistence that she come unchaperoned to the Days Inn. Pérez remained by their vehicle, and after they departed the meeting, Selena realized Saldívar had failed to provide the correct paperwork.
On March 31, 1995, Selena informed her business partner, Leonard Wong, of her intention to meet Saldívar once more to collect perfume samples and the accurate financial statements.
Upon Selena's return to the Days Inn later that afternoon, she consented to drive Saldívar to the hospital for an examination pertaining to the alleged assault. However, medical staff ultimately advised the two women that the procedure would need to be conducted at a different facility.
Subsequently, Selena and Saldívar went back to the Days Inn.
What Was the Cause of Selena Quintanilla's Death?
Back at the hotel, Selena reiterated her request for Saldívar to hand over the financial documents. At this point, Saldívar drew the Taurus Model 85 .38-caliber revolver and fired, striking Selena in the shoulder.
Severely injured, Selena frantically fled to the hotel lobby seeking assistance, pursued by Saldívar who yelled insults. Selena was quickly transported to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital, where she was declared deceased at approximately 1:05 p.m. local time on March 31, 1995.
Concurrently, Saldívar initiated a confrontation with law enforcement, refusing to leave her vehicle in the Days Inn parking lot. Saldívar initially made threats of suicide before eventually yielding to FBI agents following a protracted 10-hour standoff.
Saldívar faced charges of first-degree murder and entered a plea of not guilty. During the trial, Saldívar insisted the shooting was unintentional. She was convicted in October 1995.
That same month, October 1995, Saldívar received a life sentence with eligibility for parole. Presently, she is incarcerated at a women’s correctional facility in Gatesville, Texas.
Saldívar pursued parole in December 2024; however, her application was rejected in March 2025. As of this publication, she continues to be imprisoned.
What Information Did Selena Quintanilla's Post-Mortem Examination Uncover Regarding Her Demise?
The medical examiner’s office in Nueces County, Texas, consented to expedite an autopsy just three hours after Selena’s passing, owing to the profound public fascination with the matter.
Us Weekly acquired the authentic 1995 report, which verified Selena’s death resulted from a gunshot wound to her lower right shoulder. Her demise was officially categorized as a homicide.
The medical examiner verified that her demise was caused by “exsanguinating internal and external hemorrhage,” which translates to massive bleeding, resulting from “a perforating gunshot wound” to the chest.
Coroner Lloyd White further stated, “In my judgment, Selena Quintanilla Pérez, a 23-year-old female, succumbed to an exsanguinating internal and external hemorrhage—that is, profound blood loss—occasioned by a perforating gunshot wound to the thorax (chest).”
The autopsy report indicated the bullet penetrated Selena's back. Its trajectory was mapped from the ribs into the “upper pulmonary lobe,” then through “the chest wall.” A corresponding exit wound was observed on the “upper right anterior chest.”
The medical examiner concluded that the bullet's course severely damaged Selena’s subclavian artery, a factor that contributed significantly to her demise. Furthermore, the coroner observed “blood [was] evident across numerous sections of the garments” Selena wore when she passed away.
