This couple's path crossed during their acting studies at Northwestern University, leading them to exchange vows in 1951. Even with their deep bond, the pair has openly shared the challenges they've navigated throughout their union.
“Life brings many events, and as you experience them … you inflict pain upon one another,” Bartlett recounted to Forbes in March 2022. “Though we’ve caused each other pain, you heal, you evolve, you transform, and you adjust. It’s essential to be capable of adjusting to your partner. Their needs must come first. This isn't an instant process. It took us many years to achieve a truly companionate marriage.”
The former star of Little House on the Prairie revealed details concerning the unfaithfulness that marked the initial period of their partnership in her 2023 autobiography, Middle of the Rainbow.
“I suppose our marriage began with a degree of openness, but it proved to be extremely hurtful. It wasn't successful,” she remembered. “That was a period when such arrangements were common. It was a time in New York characterized by extensive sexual freedom and many individuals engaging in diverse activities, very uninhibited. However, I question if there was a slight absence of commitment, which isn't ideal.”
Bartlett stated that maintaining an open marriage with Daniels caused “significant suffering for both” of them, elaborating that “considerable anguish resulted from any boundary crossed.”
Beyond marital infidelities, the pair also experienced a profound sorrow. In 1961, the actress from Twins welcomed their son, William Jr., into the world, who tragically passed away after just 24 hours. Nevertheless, Daniels and Bartlett were resolute in their desire for parenthood, subsequently adopting sons Michael in 1964 and Robert in 1966.
In a December 2020 conversation with Forbes, Bartlett expressed that her spouse’s abilities as a parent — alongside his comedic wit — stood out as two of his qualities she cherished most.
“He brings me joy through laughter. His comedic timing and his daily knack for discovering humor are truly beneficial for me, as I tend to be quite serious. That, and his excellence as a father. He is an exceptional father,” she conveyed to the publication.

“Our objectives were aligned. We both enjoyed acting. We both appreciated it when the other had a role,” Bartlett shared with Forbes in March 2022. Daniels added, “Envy was never present between us. We genuinely took pleasure in each other’s professional engagements.”
