Sheryl Lee Ralph Embraces 'Be Present' Mantra Ahead of Fourth Emmy Nomination
Sheryl Lee Ralph is approaching the 2025 Emmy Awards with a spirit of gratitude and self-assurance.
The acclaimed Abbott Elementary actress, recognized with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Barbara Howard in the ABC mockumentary, shared exclusively with Us Weekly her intention to fully embrace the moment at this year's ceremony.
“My sole competitor is myself; that's the extent of it,” the 68-year-old Ralph stated, while elaborating on her collaboration with GSK for the THRIVE@50+ initiative. “During a trip to Ghana, I received a fragrance whose bottle bore the inscription, ‘Be present.’ This phrase etched itself into my consciousness, urging me to fully inhabit each moment. Observing this year's category, which I share with six other remarkable actresses, I'm struck by the incredible diversity within the group. The representation of women – particularly women of color and Black women – is truly noteworthy. It makes me exclaim, ‘Wow, behold the progress the future has delivered.’ I am absolutely delighted.”

This marks Ralph’s fourth successive nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her compelling performance in Abbott. Joining her on the distinguished list of nominees this year are Liza Colón-Zayas, Hannah Einbinder, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle James, Catherine O’Hara, and Jessica Williams. Ralph notably secured the award in 2022, a historic achievement as the first Black woman to claim the honor in 35 years. Now, with three more years and subsequent nominations, the veteran actress affirms that the thrill of being recognized “never diminishes.”
“To be nominated four consecutive years truly is [extraordinary],” Ralph effused with delight. “The initial year I was nominated, I triumphed, and I consider these successive nominations each year since to be a continuous victory. With every announcement of my name as a nominee, I experience immense joy and gratitude. Consider how many individuals never experience such an honor? How many will never have this opportunity? Yet, it is happening for me, and I am profoundly thankful. My appreciation extends to the Television Academy for their efforts, and I am overjoyed to be a participant.”
While Ralph might not perceive her fellow Emmy nominees as rivals, her desire to make a statement on the red carpet remains strong. The actress confided in Us that she relies on her daughter and personal stylist, Ivy Coco, to ensure she looks and feels her absolute finest for this year’s prestigious event. Ivy, 30, has been curating her mother's looks for several years, a partnership evident at previous high-profile events such as the 2024 Emmy Awards and the 2025 Golden Globes.

“My daughter serves as my stylist; we collaborate closely,” Ralph elaborated. “She’s slated to dress one or two other personalities for the red carpet this year. My playful directive to her is, ‘Don’t you dare abandon your mother! You must ensure your mother radiates.’ Our discussions often revolve around fashion, overall aesthetics, and pioneering trends. I am simply bursting with pride for her achievements.”
The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to broadcast on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, September 14, at 8 p.m. ET.
