Sheryl Lee Ralph's Legacy: Family First, Career Strong

After four decades in Hollywood, Sheryl Lee Ralph is contemplating the enduring impact she wishes to establish.

The celebrated Abbott Elementary actress, an Emmy recipient and Tony-nominated performer, revealed in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly that her lasting mark extends beyond her professional achievements to encompass the family she has nurtured.

“The legacy I aim for is rooted in the life I’ve had the privilege to live,” stated Ralph, 68, during a conversation about her collaboration with GSK for the THRIVE@50+ initiative. “It would primarily be my children. They represent my most significant legacy. I once encountered Cicely Tyson during a flight. She imparted, ‘Sheryl, you will accomplish magnificent feats, but your children will be among your most profound achievements.’ I’m uncertain how she foretold that, yet it’s a reality I am experiencing firsthand today.”

Ralph has two children with her former spouse Eric Maurice: son Etienne, 33, and daughter Ivy Coco, 30. Etienne has pursued a path similar to his mother's, establishing himself as an actor and co-founding the non-profit WalkGood LA. Ivy Coco, on the other hand, works as a celebrity stylist, with Ralph among her notable clients. The veteran actress, known for her role in Moesha, expressed to Us that she is confident that “after my time, two remarkable individuals will remain to carry my name forward.”

“Beyond that, they will forge their unique paths and pave new ways for others to emulate,” Ralph added concerning her offspring.

Despite her emphasis on family, Ralph shows no indication of decelerating her career in the near future. The performer, who has received her fourth consecutive Emmy nomination, shared that her vigor post-50 stems from prioritizing her well-being, health, and contentment.

“To truly flourish past the age of 50 entails making the intelligent decision to put yourself first, to put your health first, and to diligently observe it,” Ralph advised. “Unwind. Heed your medical professionals. Stay hydrated; maintain activity. Pause to appreciate the natural world. Observe the blossoms, inhale the scent of the earth, the atmosphere — regardless of its impurities. You exist. Relish each instant.”

Ralph’s optimistic perspective on existence, coupled with her personal background, prompted her collaboration with GSK’s THRIVE@50+ initiative. This campaign aims to celebrate and encourage individuals aged 50 and above to understand their susceptibility to health issues such as shingles. The esteemed Dreamgirls veteran revealed that her grandmother experienced this condition, which, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, affects approximately one million Americans annually.

“I believe it’s crucial, as someone with influence, to be genuine in your decisions,” Ralph stated. “Personally, I distinctly recall as a child, my grandmother developing shingles. It was quite severe. It manifested as a painful, blistering eruption on the skin. Witnessing it caused me distress. When you observe loved ones enduring even slight discomfort — that image has stayed with me. This is precisely why this cause holds such significance for me.”
