Soul Icon D'Angelo Honored at Moving Memorial Service Following Battle with Cancer

Reports indicate that D’Angelo's funeral has taken place, after the musician passed away at 51 years old due to pancreatic cancer.

Philip Lewis, a deputy editor at Huff Post, circulated a memorial program provided by D’Angelo’s friend Bill McGee, which showed the artist's service occurred on Saturday, November 1st, in Henrico, Virginia. The document stated that Bishop Ralland V. Robinson officiated the ceremony and delivered a tribute speech for the "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" vocalist, with Pastor Jamal Bryant contributing a dedicated video address. Musical performances were provided by Stevie Wonder, Brandee Younger on harp, and D’Angelo’s former ensemble, The Soultronics.

The "celebration of life" brochure also contained a statement from D’Angelo’s family and friends: “We extend our deepest thanks for the immense wave of compassion. … Michael D’Angelo’s essence will perpetually radiate through melody, affection, and illumination.”

Us Weekly sought official commentary.

Questlove, a member of The Roots, received personal thanks from the family for his assistance in organizing the memorial service. On Thursday, October 30th, Questlove authored an impactful homage to D’Angelo for Rolling Stone, disclosing that he had harbored worries about his friend's well-being for over a quarter-century.

“Honestly, I was unprepared for such a profound shock,” he admitted. “I had been steeling myself for this for around 25 years — ever since the release of the Voodoo album in 2000. I consistently harbored an unsettling premonition about D, akin to a 'the call could come at any instant' sensation. Many of our pioneering artists who live so intensely often don't complete their full artistic trajectory. And now, it's 5:30 a.m. I had mere moments to determine: How do I confront this fresh truth? My wish was not to begin my Tuesday morning … grieving.”

The family of D’Angelo verified the startling information on October 14th, stating that the artist, whose birth name was Michael Eugene Archer, had passed away after an extended struggle with cancer.

“The radiant luminary of our household has extinguished his brilliance for us in this existence,” they communicated to Us in an official release. “Following a lengthy and valiant fight against cancer, we are devastated to inform you that Michael D’Angelo Archer, recognized globally by his admirers as D’Angelo, has been summoned home, leaving this life today, October 14th, 2025.”

Their declaration went on to say, “We are pained that he can only bequeath cherished recollections to his loved ones, yet we are ever thankful for the heritage of remarkably poignant music he leaves. We request your respect for our privacy during this challenging period but welcome you to join us in lamenting his departure while concurrently honoring the musical gift he bestowed upon the globe.”

The acclaimed four-time Grammy Award recipient is survived by three offspring. He had a son, Michael Archer, with the deceased soul vocalist Angie Stone, who tragically passed away in a vehicular accident at 63 in March. Additionally, he was a father to daughter Imani Archer and son Morocco Archer from different unions. All three of his children were scheduled to speak at his “celebration of life” event.

In October, Michael, D’Angelo’s eldest son, articulated his sorrow regarding the misfortune of losing both his mother and father within the same year.

“I appreciate your thoughts and prayers throughout these exceedingly tough moments, as this has been an exceptionally trying and sorrowful year for me,” Michael, 27, informed People magazine. “I request that you persist in keeping me in your considerations, as it will not be simple, yet a key lesson both my mother and father imparted was to exhibit strength, and that is precisely what I intend to do.”

His half-sister, Imani, characterized D’Angelo’s passing as an “unquantifiable bereavement,” subsequently confessing that she remained in “utter disbelief and astonishment.”

“You were my greatest supporter, my guardian, my paramount musical muse, the most benevolent and altruistic man, and the finest father anyone could have wished for,” she posted on Instagram on October 15th. “Until the final moment, you ensured my safety from anything that would cause me fear or pain. I adore you immensely, Daddy. I regret not having more moments to share with you.”
