Steve Martin Shares Sweet 1964 Carousel Playbill Featuring Diane Keaton and Himself

Following the passing of Diane Keaton at 79, Steve Martin is sharing a cherished remembrance of her.

On Sunday, October 12, the 80-year-old Martin posted an image on Instagram showcasing a playbill from Santa Ana College’s 1964 staging of Carousel. Keaton’s entry, identified as Diane Hall — her paternal surname — was highlighted among the principal performers. (Keaton adopted her mother’s maiden name upon affiliating with the Actors’ Equity Association, due to another individual named Diane Hall already being a member.)

In another section of the playbill, Martin’s own name was encircled within the roster of the construction crew.

“This program dates back to a 1964 collegiate staging of Carousel,” Martin wrote alongside his upload. “Diane ‘Hall’ (Keaton) holds the starring role; I was part of the stage crew.”

Martin and Keaton, whose demise was verified on Saturday, October 11, both pursued acting studies at the Southern California institution during the 1960s. Their collaboration continued as they portrayed the married couple George and Nina Banks in the 1991 film Father of the Bride and its 1995 follow-up, Father of the Bride: Part II. The duo later came together for a Father of the Bride Netflix event in 2020 titled Father of the Bride: Part III (ish).

Admirers flocked to the comments section beneath Martin’s update, expressing delight over the playbill, with several comparing it to How I Met Your Mother, while others regarded it as the genesis of George and Nina’s narrative.

“This has to be the background of how the Banks family first encountered each other,” one admirer commented.

“This could be my most cherished homage to her yet,” another fan appended.

“How wonderful that you have preserved such a precious memento from the start of a remarkable and well-lived life,” a third user remarked.

Beyond posting the playbill image, Martin also used X to share a vintage photograph of a youthful Keaton, accompanied by a line from her iconic 1977 movie Annie Hall: “La dee da, la dee da.”

“Adored!” Martin expressed regarding his enduring companion.

He further utilized Instagram to upload a screengrab from Keaton’s 2021 Interview magazine article, in which she responded to inquiries from “25 notable companions and admirers.” The image displayed a query posed by Martin Short, who similarly appeared in the Father of the Bride movies.

“Who possesses more allure, myself or Steve Martin?” Short, aged 75, inquired of Keaton.

Keaton’s retort was, “Honestly, you are both absurd.”

Martin appended to the caption of his upload, “Uncertain of the original source, but this perfectly encapsulates our charming bond with Diane.”

A representative for Keaton verified that the Book Club star passed away in California on Saturday.

“No additional information is currently accessible, and her loved ones have requested discretion during this period of profound grief,” the spokesperson conveyed to People in an official communication.

The precise reason for her death remains undisclosed.
