Swimwear designer's final texts reveal meeting with investor before her sudden death on a yacht.
The final text messages of swimwear designer Martha Nolan-O’Slatarra have surfaced, months after her body was discovered on a boat at the age of 33.
According to an exposé in New York Magazine published earlier this month, Nolan had been communicating via text with investor Christopher Durnan about his financial contribution to the East x East line, a brand she co-founded with business partner Dylan Grace, just before her demise.
“If you’re seeking additional funds, let’s arrange a discussion,” Durnan, 60, allegedly proposed to Nolan, who ultimately agreed to a solo meeting with the entrepreneur while Grace, 30, was away in August.
Grace, who spoke with the publication, stated that Nolan met Durnan on his vessel at the Montauk Yacht Club.

“Martha acts on her own impulses … or used to,” Grace recalled, mentioning that her friend ceased answering her phone while aboard the yacht.
Grace indicated that Nolan sent her boyfriend, Nick DiRubio, a message stating her intention to book an Uber home at 1 a.m. the following morning.
By 9:20 p.m. that evening, Nolan became unresponsive in the group chat she shared with Grace and their mutual friends.
“Haha I’m at the yacht club currently, my phone is working,” Nolan replied ten minutes later.
Another sixty minutes passed, and Nolan was found deceased on the boat.
“She was gone almost instantly,” Durnan’s attorney Robert Holdman told the magazine, asserting that his client performed CPR after believing Nolan had experienced a heart attack. “She showed no response. … Chris is devastated. He witnessed his friend’s traumatic passing. He’s utterly destroyed.”
Holdman further elaborated, “Everything occurred very rapidly. She passed away, and then a cascade of events followed. He immediately sought help. He attempted CPR — it all unfolded one after another. There was no interruption.”
Nolan and Grace first met Durnan in 2022 when they presented their concept for East x East to him.
He subsequently committed to providing financial backing for the swimwear label.
“He genuinely liked Martha, and he desired to see her succeed. She was a good friend,” Holdman conveyed to New York Magazine.
“He was optimistic, and he appreciated her dynamic personality and the way she articulated her vision to him.”
According to Holdman, his client and Nolan had a brief romantic involvement prior to her death.
“He had informed me, after the incident, that he cared for her and had been introduced to her family,” the lawyer recounted.
“They held affection for each other, but it wasn’t an extremely serious commitment. Chris is unwilling to disclose anything [further] on that matter, whether it’s a definite ‘no’ or a definitive ‘yes.’ I don’t think he believes it would honor her memory. He simply preferred not to discuss it.”
The Kin of Martha Nolan-O’Slatarra Seeking ‘Specifics' Following Her Passing
Friends of Nolan, however, told New York Magazine that she never had a romantic relationship with Durnan.
She was romantically involved with DiRubio at the time of her demise.
“Martha possessed a unique ability to illuminate any room she entered, whether it was through her characteristic ‘Hi’ or her memorable hand gestures,” DiRubio stated during a funeral service held in Nolan’s native Ireland that August.
“Her positive presence was unmistakable in every space she occupied. Martha had a knack for prioritizing others. She enjoyed helping people, and many of you in this room have been fortunate enough to experience that kindness, whether it involved telling you to get a grip or concentrate on the good aspects of life, or simply providing a comforting ear.”
