Sydney Sweeney Addresses American Eagle Ad Controversy Denying Eugenics Interpretation
Online discussions have emerged concerning Sydney Sweeney's public address of the extensive criticism surrounding her American Eagle advertisement.
“It was a denim commercial. Frankly, the public reaction caught me off guard, but I genuinely adore jeans. They're practically my uniform,” the 28-year-old Sweeney revealed to GQ in their recent cover feature. “Ultimately, I understood the purpose of that advertisement was to showcase excellent jeans, and it had no impact on me personally.”
In August, the star of Christy spearheaded American Eagle’s denim line through a promotional effort called “Sydney Sweeney Knows Good Jeans.” Some online followers interpreted the campaign, which punned on the words "jeans" and "genes," as endorsing the contentious and debunked concept of eugenics.
“That perspective, none of it, ever crossed my mind,” she explained to GQ regarding the widespread online attention. “I mostly kept my phone aside. My days were filled with filming. Since I'm shooting Euphoria, I'm often on set for 16 hours and generally avoid bringing my phone, so I'd work, return home, and rest. Consequently, I wasn't exposed to much of the discourse.”

She added, “My belief is that when I choose to address a topic personally, my voice will be heard.”
Her remarks, nonetheless, quickly ignited a lively discussion regarding Sweeney’s actual motivations.

A third supporter insisted that Sweeney “requires absolute safeguarding.”

Many asserted that Sweeney’s statements “exacerbated the entire situation.”

“This strikes me as utterly baffling,” another X user stated. “She merely needed to dismiss it as absurd and declare, ‘Naturally, I reject any notion of genetic superiority.’ [The GQ interviewer] offered Sydney Sweeney a straightforward escape, yet she failed to seize it. That's astonishing.”

Sweeney had previously refrained from commenting on the AE campaign, though the company issued a defense of its objectives earlier in the autumn.
“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ was exclusively and consistently about the denim. Her denim. Her narrative,” an August declaration from AE stated. “Our commitment remains to celebrating how each individual wears their AE jeans with self-assurance, in their unique style. Quality denim flatters everyone.”
Subsequently, Sweeney has even declined to address the denim controversy during her promotional tour for Christy.
“My purpose there is to champion my film and everyone who contributed to its creation, not to discuss denim,” she informed Vanity Fair in September concerning the movie's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. “The subject of the film is Christy [Martin], and that is precisely what I will be discussing.”
