The Reiner Family’s Final Joyful Red Carpet Appearance Before Tragic Deaths

Rob Reiner, along with his wife Michele Singer Reiner and their three children, were all smiles at the premiere of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, just three months before Rob and Michele’s deaths.

The celebrated filmmaker received support from his loved ones — specifically their three children, Jake, Nick and Romy — on September 9 at the Los Angeles debut screening of the highly anticipated sequel to This Is Spinal Tap at the Egyptian Theatre.

Photographs from the occasion show Rob, wearing a black blazer over a Spinal Tap t-shirt, posing on the red carpet with his wife Michele, sons Jake and Nick, age 32, and daughter Romy. Also present was Maria Gilfillan, believed to be Jake’s significant other. The family wore matching black attire, coordinating with the director. (Rob also has an adopted daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.)

This joyful event commemorated the 41st anniversary of the original Spinal Tap film's debut in theaters back in 1984.

The Spinal Tap mockumentary series centers on an imagined rock band featuring Nigel Tufnell (portrayed by Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Reiner also features in the films as the documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi.

While This Is Spinal Tap achieved cult classic status, Rob steered clear of producing a sequel for quite some time.

“We had absolutely no intention of ever making a sequel,” Rob shared with Variety in July 2025. “People constantly pressed us over the years, saying, ‘You must make a sequel!’ and our response was always, ‘No, no, we finished it — leave it alone.’”

Following Shearer’s successful lawsuit against the license holders of the first film to reclaim the rights, the main actors started thinking about a follow-up.

“Initially, we felt no, the standard was set too high. But we then gathered a few times and a concept began to form, which originated from a very logical starting point: The reality that [the Spinal Tap band members] hadn’t performed together for 15 years served as a key plot element, as did the fact that [actor] Tony Hendra, who played their manager Ian Faith, had died,” Rob stated. “We then asked ourselves, what if their manager’s daughter received a contract that mandated a final show?”

He continued, “This initially didn’t seem promising because they hadn’t performed in 15 years — however, we recalled how Kate Bush had a song featured in Stranger Things, leading to a sudden resurgence of both the track and her career. What if a well-known musician or somebody else starts experimenting with a Spinal Tap song, someone records it on an iPhone and uploads it to TikTok, where it goes viral, suddenly restoring their relevance? Combining all these elements led us to develop this concept.”

Bleecker Street released Spinal Tap II: The End Continues on September 12, slightly more than three months prior to Rob and his wife being discovered deceased inside their Brentwood residence in Los Angeles on Sunday, December 14.
