The Rock's Potential Presidential Run: From Hollywood to the White House?
Are you ready to support what The Rock might bring to the political table? Dwayne Johnson is currently enjoying immense success as one of Hollywood's highest-earning actors, but he could eventually set his sights on the political arena.
The action movie star first brought up the idea in 2016, posting “perhaps one day” on Twitter in response to a fan who suggested he should run for president. While Johnson might have been joking, political columnists embraced the concept, including Washington Post writer Alyssa Rosenberg, who penned an article in June 2016 discussing why he “could actually triumph” if he chose to run.
“I deeply care about our [country] … and the prospect of one day becoming President to instigate genuine positive influence and global transformation is highly tempting,” Johnson conveyed via Instagram in his reply.

“I wouldn’t dismiss it,” Johnson told Vanity Fair when asked about considering a presidential run, referencing Trump's 2016 election as proof that seasoned politicians don't always succeed. “It would offer a significant chance to assist people, so it's a possibility. This recent election illustrates that anything can occur.”
May 2017
“About a year ago, it began coming up more and more frequently,” Johnson said in a GQ interview, discussing the 2016 Washington Post op-ed about his potential campaign. “There was a true sense of sincerity, which made me go home and reflect, ‘Let me truly re-examine my answer and ensure I'm providing a response that is honest and also respectful.’ I didn't want to be trivial — ‘We'll have three-day weekends! No taxes!’”
Regarding a run, he further added: “I believe that's a genuine prospect.”

Johnson informed Variety he would “absolutely” consider running but pointed out he would not be able to continue his acting profession.
“It was never something I proclaimed loudly or publicly declared as my intention, but as that narrative gained traction, Americans embraced it, and there was a widespread sentiment of, ‘We're serious, and we would genuinely welcome the idea of you running,’” he stated. “Consequently, I realized I had to listen to the populace and genuinely, deeply consider it. That's my current position — I am well aware that politics is not my industry, so the best thing I can do is continue to listen and absorb as much as possible. I am still observing our presidency and how every new development is handled. I continue to watch our government leaders, and like all Americans, I remain hopeful that our leaders exhibit composure, insight, and the capacity to unite our country during these difficult times — which I don’t feel our current administration is doing — so that's where I stand.”
He continued: “I deeply care about our nation, and I deeply care about our citizens — especially now. Integrity matters, and being a decent human being matters, and character matters, and leadership matters.”
Johnson also mused about the notion of choosing a vice presidential candidate. “Two critical qualities immediately come to mind are that I'd want my VP to be an outstanding leader and a person of high caliber,” he clarified. “Whether that person comes from Hollywood, Washington, the medical field, Wall Street, or education.”

After a survey indicated that 46 percent of Americans would back a Johnson campaign, he responded with good humor via social media. “Not sure our Founding Fathers ever envisioned a six-foot-four, bald, tattooed, half-Black, half-Samoan, tequila-drinking, pickup truck-driving, fanny pack-wearing fellow joining their esteemed company — but if it ever happens it’d be my honor to serve the people,” he tweeted.

In a Vanity Fair profile, Johnson admitted that he’d started investigating what a political campaign might look like. “[I’ve conducted] a limited amount of research and analysis to understand where this idea originates and what its future implications might be,” he explained, adding that “all indicators are very positive — for example, in 2024, and for example, in 2028.”
He went on to confess that he doesn’t possess extensive expertise when it comes to crafting laws. “You know, ultimately, I don’t know the first thing about politics,” he said. “I don’t know the first thing about policy. I care profoundly about our country. I care about every f–king American who bleeds red, and that’s all of them. And — there’s no self-deception here — I may have some respectable leadership qualities, but that doesn’t automatically qualify me as an excellent presidential candidate.”

Johnson stated a political campaign was “no longer an option” because he wished to concentrate on raising his family. He shares a daughter, Simone (born in 2001), with ex-wife Dany Garcia, and two daughters, Jasmine (born in 2015) and Tiana (born in 2018), with wife Lauren Hashian.
“I cherish our nation and everyone in it. I also cherish being a father,” he clarified during an interview with CBS Mornings. “That’s what matters most to me, being a daddy, first and foremost, especially during this period, this crucial time in my daughters’ lives. Because I recall what it was like to be constantly on the road and so occupied that I was absent for many years in my first daughter’s [life].”

During a discussion on Trevor Noah’s “What Now?” podcast, Johnson asserted that members of unnamed “groups” approached him in late 2022 to consider running for president after a poll showed 46 percent of Americans would support his campaign. “It was a significant occurrence, and it came entirely unexpectedly,” he said. “It was one after the other, and they cited that survey, and they also presented their own in-depth research that would demonstrate that should I ever pursue that path [I’d be a serious contender]. It all felt very dreamlike because that has never been my aspiration. My aim has never been to enter politics. As a matter of fact, there’s a great deal about politics that I despise.”
Johnson proceeded to explain that his wrestling career often kept him away from his eldest daughter, Simone, when she was a child, and he did not want that to be repeated with his younger children. “That was one of my primary conversations with the groups, who were ultimately like, ‘Yes, but other individuals have managed it differently,’” he elaborated, adding that he hasn't definitively ruled out a candidacy. “If that’s ultimately what the populace desires, then naturally I would give it thought.”

Later in the month, Johnson told Jimmy Fallon that “it remains perpetually astonishing” to hear people discuss wanting him to lead the nation. “I was wrestling in flea markets for $40 per match, hoping that, ‘Hey, I just want a complimentary corn dog at the end of the night.’ And now here we are, years later, I’m sitting with you, and this topic has come up. I’m so thankful,” Johnson expressed, adding that he would “further down the line” consider a campaign, perhaps once his children are older. “I understand what it’s like to have a profession that separates me from my role as a father. And that is what matters most to me.”

“Here’s what I can convey to you with complete certainty and conviction is that I believe in diligent effort, managing what is within one's control, and putting in all the hard work personally, and being humble, driven, and appreciative, achieving success, and consistently giving back,” he stated during a conversation with Today when asked about seeking office. “That’s what I can tell you. So, it’s not a definitive refusal.”

Even while generating Oscar buzz for his performance in The Smashing Machine, Johnson was still fielding questions about a possible presidential campaign. “It’s truly wild, man,” he mentioned to Variety’s “Awards Circuit” podcast when asked whether he’d ever run. “I’m always honored when people ask that. I love what I do. I love storytelling. But yes … we’ll see.
