Tom Cruise finally receives his Oscar at the Governors Awards
It's a significant milestone for Tom Cruise!
The 63-year-old actor was presented with an honorary Oscar on Sunday, November 16, during the Governors Awards ceremony. This yearly event, held in Hollywood, was organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the esteemed organization behind the Oscars.
“Cinema has transported me across the globe,” Cruise shared during his heartfelt acceptance speech. “It enables me to value and honor diverse perspectives. Furthermore, it reveals our common humanity, highlighting how similar we are in countless aspects. And regardless of our origins, within the confines of a theater, we share laughter, emotions, and aspirations, which epitomizes the strength of this artistic medium.”
“And that's precisely why it holds such significance, why it resonates deeply with me. Therefore, creating films isn't merely my profession; it defines my very being,” the star of Mission: Impossible further elaborated.

He further stated: “My passion for movies ignited in my formative years, as far back as my memory serves. I recall being a small child in a dim theater, witnessing a solitary ray of light pierce the darkness, and upon gazing upward, it appeared to burst vibrantly onto the screen. Instantly, the world revealed itself to be far more expansive than I had ever comprehended.”
“Complete civilizations, diverse existences, and vast sceneries unfolded before my eyes, igniting a certain spark,” Cruise recounted. “It ignited an eagerness for exploration, a thirst for wisdom, a craving to comprehend mankind, to develop personas, to narrate tales, and to observe the globe. It broadened my perception. It unleashed my creative faculty to envision that existence could stretch well beyond the limits I then recognized in my personal journey.”
“And that illuminating ray awakened a yearning to uncover the world, a path I have pursued continuously since,” he concluded.
Despite four Academy Award nominations, Cruise has yet to secure a win. His initial nod was for Best Actor in 1990 for Born on the Fourth of July, followed by another in the identical category in 1997 for Jerry Maguire, helmed by Cameron Crowe. He also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2000 for Magnolia and for Best Picture in 2023 for Top Gun: Maverick.
The announcement of Cruise as an honorary award recipient came in June.
“The upcoming Governors Awards will honor four iconic figures whose remarkable careers and dedication to our cinematic world persistently make a profound impression,” Janet Yang, President of AMPAS, stated back then. Yang further highlighted that Cruise’s “unwavering devotion to our movie-making fraternity, to the theatrical viewing, and to the stunt profession, which has captivated everyone,” served as the rationale for his recognition.

The actor shared the honor with fellow laureates, choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas. Dolly Parton was additionally honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award during Sunday evening’s gala.
In contrast to the Academy Awards, which recognize artists and professionals for achievements on individual films, the Governors Awards acknowledge an individual’s complete professional journey and collective contributions. The inaugural Governors Awards event took place on November 14, 2009.
