Toni Braxton Weighs In On Kayla Nicole's Taylor Swift Halloween Costume Controversy

Kayla Nicole maintains her widely-shared Halloween ensemble was not intended as a jab at Taylor Swift, yet this assertion failed to quell the online fervor.

The original artist who inspired the outfit has now offered her perspective.

“I prefer to believe she was simply honoring me and chose it for Halloween,” Toni Braxton shared with Entertainment Tonight in a segment broadcast on Friday, November 21.

Nicole, 34, was romantically involved with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, now Swift’s fiancé, between 2017 and 2022. Her Halloween portrayal of Braxton’s style from the music video for her successful 2000 track “He Wasn’t Man Enough” stirred considerable discussion.

The controversy also saw Travis Kelce’s former girlfriend, Kayla Nicole, deactivate her X account.

Within the Instagram post she uploaded on Halloween evening, Nicole was captured dancing and mouthing the lyrics: “Did you know about us then? / Do you know I left your husband, darling? I’m not recalling him / But you wedded him / Do you know I caused him to depart? / Do you know he pleaded to remain with me? / He wasn’t sufficient for me.”

Upon ET’s Kevin Frazier informing Braxton, 58, that the post emerged amidst theories that Swift, 35, had alluded to Nicole on her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, she responded, “That sounds quite resentful.”

Regardless of the concurrent events, Nicole has firmly maintained her intention was not to disparage Swift.

“I perceive Halloween as a chance to express one’s creative spirit,” she articulated during the November 7 installment of her “The Pre-Game” podcast. “Individuals will attempt to impose their own interpretations, but for myself, I am not in the practice of diminishing other women. My aim is to uplift them, and for me, this occasion was a tribute to a cultural luminary.”

Furthermore, a past video clip featuring Travis Kelce and his former partner Kayla Nicole discussing a phone resurfaced following the 'Opalite' reference.

She had stated on her podcast four days earlier that the attire was, in fact, prompted by a “distinct” childhood recollection — one that, coincidentally, involved another girl named Taylor.

“My closest childhood friend was Caucasian, and her name was Taylor,” she recounted. “Her home was the sole place I was permitted to visit as a child, as my mother disapproved of such activities. I distinctly recall riding home from private school in my uniform in the rear of a police van with Taylor, and her mother had this song playing.”

To her, it signified a moment of realization, prompting the thought, “Remarkable, even white individuals enjoy Black music.”

Supporters of Swift have speculated since The Life of a Showgirl’s October 3 launch that Swift aimed a critique at Nicole in her track “Opalite.” The song's words appear to allude to a widely circulated video from Nicole and Kelce’s (36) relationship, where Kelce was heard urging her to put down her phone.

“You failed to grasp it / Why you felt isolated / You were truly invested / She was engrossed in her device / You were merely an image,” Swift croons. “And don’t we strive to embrace love / And invest our whole being / You ultimately departed the scene / And what a straightforward idea / You hunger until you don’t.”
