Trump Addresses Diddy Pardon Prospects Amidst Legal Battles
Prior to the conclusion of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal proceedings, commentators had already started to wonder if President Donald Trump would grant him a pardon.
This discussion grew more prevalent in the spring, following the president’s decision to pardon reality TV personalities Todd and Julie Chrisley, who had been found guilty of bank fraud and tax evasion in 2022. The former stars of Chrisley Knows Best, who consistently maintained their innocence, were set free from prison in May after fulfilling approximately two and a half years of their separate sentences.
Not long after Diddy’s trial commenced in New York City that May, Trump shared his opinion on the potential of pardoning him.
“Initially, I would examine the situation,” the president stated during a White House press conference on May 30. “I haven’t been tracking it very closely, although it’s certainly receiving significant media attention.”
Diddy was taken into custody in September 2024 and faced charges including transportation for prostitution, sex trafficking, and racketeering conspiracy. He entered a plea of not guilty and denied all allegations against him. On July 2, a jury found him culpable on two counts of transportation but acquitted him of the more serious accusations.
President Donald Trump Discloses Probability of Pardoning Diddy
The embattled mogul’s legal representatives have made multiple attempts to secure his release before his sentencing on October 3, but Judge Arun Subramanian has rejected all of his bail applications. In his August 4 decision against Diddy’s latest plea, the judge determined that the defense had failed to provide “extraordinary reasons” that would justify Diddy’s freedom.

Is Trump Able to Pardon Diddy?
Given that Diddy was convicted in federal court, Trump possesses the constitutional authority as president to pardon him for the two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution. Diddy has not yet received his sentence, but he is currently detained at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. Should Trump issue a pardon, Diddy would likely be released within a few days. (The Chrisleys were released just one day after Trump announced his decision to pardon them.)
Do Trump and Diddy Have a Relationship?
Diddy was once on friendly terms with the president, but Trump mentioned in May that they had not communicated in years. “He used to really care for me, but I believe when I entered politics … that connection fractured, from what I’ve gathered,” Trump explained during the aforementioned Oval Office press conference. “I’m not sure — he didn’t inform me of that, but I started seeing some somewhat critical remarks in the newspapers.”
Before Trump ventured into politics, the two were pictured at several events together. In 2005, Trump and his wife, Melania, attended a gala honoring Diddy that was hosted by Russell Simmons. Their most recent public appearance together was at the 2011 premiere of the film Tower Heist.
Has Diddy Requested a Pardon from Trump?
Diddy’s legal team has issued contradictory statements regarding whether they are actively pursuing clemency from the Trump administration. In an interview with Variety published August 1, Diddy’s lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, stated that a potential pardon was not an official component of the team’s legal strategy.
“I am not involved in that in any way. I possess absolutely no insight,” he said concerning the pardon rumors. “At times I think there’s nothing to it, and at other times I think it’s merely speculation. However, I do not claim to understand the president’s thinking. I genuinely don’t know.”
He further elaborated, “My area of practice is solely focused on the case itself — the merits of the case and what transpired in the courtroom. I don’t engage in anything else.”
President Donald Trump Is 'Seriously' Considering Pardoning Diddy: Report
Days later, however, another one of Diddy’s lawyers, Nicole Westmoreland, asserted that the team had contacted the White House about a pardon. “It’s my understanding that we’ve reached out and engaged in discussions concerning a pardon,” she informed CNN on August 5, adding that Diddy “is an optimistic individual and I believe he remains hopeful.”
Agnifilo then reiterated that he has not engaged in any discussions with Trump about a pardon. “I have no involvement with a possible pardon,” he told CBS Mornings in an interview published August 7. “I have had conversations with no one. I have not spoken to the president. I have not spoken to anyone who communicates with the president about Sean Combs. I have not.”
When questioned about whether he had spoken to Diddy regarding a pardon, Agnifilo stated that he has only conveyed what is in the news. “He says, ‘Go tell [Mr. Trump] that I require a pardon,’” the attorney explained. “‘Go tell him I deserve a pardon.’ That is what he said.”
50 Cent Will 'Reach Out' to Prevent Diddy From Receiving a Presidential Pardon
During an August 9 appearance on TMZ’s “2 Angry Men” podcast, Diddy’s lawyer Mark Geragos reaffirmed the claim that the defense has not requested a pardon from the Trump administration but offered his perspective on the possibility of it occurring. Geragos suggested that Trump and Diddy might now have a deeper understanding of each other, having both faced prosecution in New York.
“I think if you were to ask Sean, he’d say, ‘Listen, after [experiencing] what I’ve gone through, I comprehend it,’” the attorney remarked. “You must endure a criminal prosecution and the agony it inflicts upon an individual to grasp that you never truly recover from it, and I believe that holds true for the president and I believe it holds true for Sean Combs. So, there is something that resonates there. I think the president can reflect and say to himself, ‘You know, I’ve been in that position, I went through both civil and criminal cases that were somewhat absurd. … I’m not so convinced that [a pardon is] improbable, I think it’s more than probable.”
When asked if Diddy would “pledge allegiance to Trump” in exchange for a pardon, Geragos indicated he would at least alter his previous criticism of the president. “There is something about that brotherhood of individuals who have been accused and have navigated the legal process that fosters a bond,” he elucidated. “It would not surprise me to hear Sean state, ‘I now understand it, I comprehend it and I was mistaken then.’ I don’t know that I would say he’s pledging loyalty, but I think he would likely say, ‘I now grasp what he endured.’”
What Has Trump Stated Regarding Pardoning Diddy?
Trump has made several comments about the prospect of pardoning the recording artist, but Us Weekly understands that the White House does not comment on potential pardons. In May, before Diddy’s conviction, Trump asserted that his personal relationship with Diddy would not sway his decision to grant him clemency.
“I would certainly examine the facts,” he said during a press conference. “If I believe someone was unjustly treated, whether they like me or dislike me, it would not have any bearing on my decision.”
After the verdict, however, Trump implied that a pardon is improbable. “Well, he was essentially, in a way, partially acquitted. I don’t understand why he’s still incarcerated or something,” the president remarked during an August 1 appearance on Newsmax. “He was celebrating a victory, but I suppose it wasn’t as significant a victory.”
Donald Trump Declares He Wouldn’t Rule Out a Pardon for Diddy: 'Nobody's Asked'
Trump then claimed that Diddy had exhibited a “hostile” demeanor toward his political career. “I was very amicable with him, got along with him splendidly, seemed like a decent fellow, didn’t know him intimately,” Trump stated. “But when I sought office he was quite antagonistic. But it was challenging, we are human beings and we prefer not to have things obscure our judgment, right? But when you knew someone and you were fine and then you run for office and he made some regrettable statements … so I don’t know, it makes it more challenging to do.”
When Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty inquired whether that meant it was “more probable a no” for Diddy concerning a pardon, Trump responded, “I would say so.”
In October, Trump asserted that Diddy’s team had requested a pardon. “Many individuals have asked me for pardons,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “I call him Puff Daddy, [he] has asked me for a pardon.”
How Much Prison Time Is Diddy Encountering?
Each count of transportation to engage in prostitution carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, which could be served consecutively, meaning Diddy faced up to 20 years in prison. In October, he was sentenced to 50 months in prison, or just over four years. The year-plus he has already spent at MDC will be credited toward his time served.
