Trump Lashes Out at Clooney's French Citizenship, Recalling Past Ties

Former Donald Trump has offered a lengthy critique of George Clooney’s recent acquisition of French citizenship.

“Wonderful news! George and Amal Clooney, consistently inaccurate predictors of political outcomes, have officially become citizens of France which, regrettably, is currently experiencing a significant crime wave due to their seriously flawed management of immigration, mirroring the challenges we faced under President Joe Biden,” Trump, 79, posted on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, December 31.

Trump proceeded to reference a 2024 opinion piece penned by Clooney, 64, who previously suggested Joe Biden should relinquish his presidential bid and allow Kamala Harris to contend against Trump instead.

“Recall when Clooney, following the now-notorious debate, distanced himself from Joe during a fundraising event, subsequently aligning himself with another promising candidate, Kamala(K!), who is presently competing with the least effective governors in the nation, including Tim Waltz and Gavin Newsom, to determine who will lead the Democrats to their inevitable defeat,” Trump wrote.

George Clooney Discusses His Past Association With Former President Donald Trump

The former president further asserted that the Academy Award winner “received more attention for his political activities than he did for his relatively few, and generally unremarkable films,” claiming, “He wasn’t a major movie star at all; he was simply an ordinary individual who frequently complained about logical considerations in politics.”

News emerged late in December that George and his wife, Amal Clooney, along with their 8-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, had been granted French citizenship.

Just one day prior to Trump’s Truth Social commentary, George shared details about his history with the businessman before his foray into politics.

“I was quite familiar with him,” he told Variety in an interview published on Tuesday, December 30. “He used to contact me often, and he once attempted to arrange for me to visit a spinal surgeon at a hospital. I would see him at social clubs and restaurants.”

Trump initially assumed office in 2016 and was re-elected in 2024. “He’s a bit of a jester,” George stated. “Well, he was. That changed considerably.”

Throughout his time as president, Trump has been subject to criticism from prominent figures in Hollywood. The Jay Kelly star has been a consistent detractor, asserting in 2021 that Trump’s legacy would forever be found in the “annals of history.”

George Clooney Explains His Decision to Relocate Family From L.A. to a Farm in France

Despite facing rebukes from the White House, George and Amal, 47, are anticipating a settled life with their children abroad. The actor has spoken openly about his desire to raise his children outside of the Hollywood spotlight.

“We reside on a farm in France. A significant portion of my childhood was spent on a farm, and as a boy, I disliked the entire concept,” George told Esquire in October. “However, for them, it’s quite different – they aren’t constantly on their tablets; they share meals with adults and are responsible for clearing their own dishes. They have a considerably better upbringing.”

George explained that “they largely don’t concern themselves with fame” in France, which provided him with reassurance as a parent. “I was apprehensive about raising our children in L.A. … I don’t want them to be anxious about photographers. I don’t want them being compared to the children of other famous individuals,” he said.
