Two Decades of Love: Ali Larter and Hayes MacArthur's Enduring Romance

Two Decades of Love: Ali Larter and Hayes MacArthur's Enduring Romance

Ali Larter and her husband, Hayes MacArthur, have been supporting each other for two decades.

The couple initially met in 2005 while working on the film Homo Erectus and subsequently developed a relationship.

“After just three weeks, I told my boyfriend that I wanted to marry him and that we could do it immediately,” Larter shared with Cosmopolitan in 2007. “I was looking forward to that time when I’d be at home with our children.”

Larter and MacArthur announced their engagement in 2007. “Ever since I was 15 years old, all I desired was to find the man I would marry. My heart had been hurt so many times because I placed so much pressure on it. And then … I was completely surprised,” she told Cosmopolitan in 2009. “[He] showed me the path, and everything felt right. This is how it’s meant to be.”

Us Weekly confirmed in 2009 that Larter and MacArthur exchanged vows in a private ceremony at his parents’ home in Kennebunkport, Maine. The couple later welcomed their son, Theodore, in 2010 and their daughter, Vivienne, in 2015.

They subsequently announced that they had welcomed their daughter, Vivienne, into their family. “It’s a girl!” Larter wrote on her website at the time, including a photograph of her newborn sleeping while wrapped in a blanket. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to share news of the arrival of Vivienne Margaret MacArthur on Thursday, January 15th, 2015.”

August 2016

Larter explained to Us how she and MacArthur maximize their date nights as parents of two. “We like to stroll to dinner,” Larter said. “We love to go out and get pasta and a lovely bottle of wine and simply take our time. We don’t want to just rush to a restaurant and rush to eat. It’s really about disconnecting from our responsibilities.”

Larter added that she sees qualities of herself and MacArthur in her children. “Teddy’s like me because we are passionate and we definitely have a bit of a temper and it takes us a while to calm down,” she said. “My daughter is so amusing. She giggles at herself, she laughs at everything, and she’s very similar to my husband in that way. Just completely the most enjoyable person to be around.”

2020

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Larter and MacArthur relocated their family from Los Angeles to Idaho.

Larter exclusively told Us that she never envisioned she would end up in Idaho. “It unfolded in the most remarkable way for us,” she said. “If you had told me this 20 years ago, even five years ago, I would have never believed that I’d be residing in a small town in the mountains.”

She continued, “We absolutely cherish it, and we are so grateful to be able to raise our family here. It’s truly, truly beautiful to live a more modest life with our children during this phase.”

Ali Larter ‘Never Believed’ She’d Leave Hollywood and Settle Down in Idaho

January 2025

Larter reflected on her and MacArthur’s move to Idaho during a January 2025 appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark.

“Our children’s schools were closed during COVID and we were like, ‘Why are we just sitting here?’ It wasn’t working well in Los Angeles,” Larter said during the episode. “So, my husband suggested, ‘Let’s take a road trip to Idaho [and] go skiing with the kids.’”

The getaway trip evolved into a longer stay. “We fell in love with nature and the mountains and this entire new life,” she gushed. “We completely shifted gears and embraced it. We literally had our house [in California] for less than a year. We went back to L.A. and we realized we wanted to prioritize our family.”

Larter continued, “Our life is so different there and it’s a small town, and it kind of holds you to a different standard of responsibility. It’s something that me and Hayes really wanted to do for our children, so we did.”

Larter explained that the family now has “a genuine life” that is “grounded in reality” after relocating to Idaho.

“We’re so thankful,” Larter said, later joking that Theodore wasn’t initially pleased with the idea. “He likes fast cars and designer cologne and that whole thing, like, he wants to be in the big city. I’m like, ‘At 18, you can go [back].’ … He really likes it now and I think he understands how wonderful his family is there.”

Larter added that she and MacArthur “believe if you can hike a mountain, you can run a boardroom.” She concluded, “We just believe in raising them that way.”

November 2025

Larter shared the secret to her enduring romance with MacArthur, telling People, “Appreciate every day. Strive to be genuinely kind.” The actress also revealed one of the things she admires most about her husband, adding, “The way that he looks after our family.”
