Viral TikTok sparks outrage over $4,000 hair service at Chrissy Rasmussen's salon

While Chrissy Rasmussen’s salon, Hair by Chrissy, might have previously appeared on your TikTok For You Page, it's now the subject of widespread discussion among internet users due to a recent controversy.

This online commotion started when TikTok user @notfamous808 publicly criticized Rasmussen over what she described as a disappointing visit to the salon, claiming she was charged close to $3,000 for the stylist to purportedly handle her hair for merely one minute.

In the video — which has accumulated over 26.9 million views since its upload earlier this month — the influencer stated that her total cost exceeded $4,000.

“Seriously, you could have traveled to Italy for a whole month for $4k,” one commenter remarked, with another adding, “The mere thought of spending $4,000 on a hair treatment …” A third user expressed, “Absolutely not. If you paid $4,000, your satisfaction should have been 110 percent.”

Us Weekly contacted Rasmussen for her perspective.

What Exactly Is Hair by Chrissy and Who Is Chrissy Rasmussen?

Rasmussen boasts over 27 years of professional experience and is the proprietor of Habit Salon, which operates branches in both Arizona and California, offering treatments such as haircuts, extensions, and coloring. The hairstylist has amassed more than 1.5 million followers on Instagram, where she frequently posts before-and-after videos of her clientele. And who are these clients? Famous personalities like Next Gen NYC’s Ariana Biermann and social media influencers such as Dixie D’Amelio have received services at her establishment.

What Was TikTok Creator @notfamous808's Experience Like at Hair by Chrissy?

The content creator started documenting her experience at the salon earlier this month, explaining her desire for extensions, color, and a trim. @Notfamous808 asserted that Rasmussen herself was “nowhere to be found” within the salon, and instead, she was attended to by more than 10 different individuals.

The influencer provided actual proof, sharing a screenshot of the invoice she received post-service. Alongside charges for items like serum and detangler, @Notfamous808 was also billed $2,974 for the “Chrissy service” — which she claimed represented “just the fee for Chrissy touching your hair.” The alleged total on the receipt amounted to $4,216.61.

“It was quite disheartening to pay the amount I did for the service,” the influencer commented, stating that the experience “did not meet my expectations.”

In a separate TikTok post, @notfamous808 claimed that Rasmussen had promised to style the influencer’s hair to resemble her inspiration photo — but only if the content creator purchased new extensions directly from the salon. The influencer also alleged she had “no idea” she was buying the products, including shampoo, that appeared on her bill.

What Has Chrissy Rasmussen Publicly Stated Regarding the Hair by Chrissy Controversy?

Rasmussen has yet to release an official statement concerning the situation. (Us Weekly did seek her comments.) However, she appears to have subtly addressed the critiques by uploading a series of videos to her TikTok story. In one particular clip, Rasmussen can be seen sticking out her tongue while working on extensions before stepping away and allowing an employee to finish. “Chrissy doing hair,” was the caption accompanying the video.

In another video, Rasmussen was shown cutting a client’s hair, with the caption reading, “Chrissy cuts.” A third segment featured Rasmussen curling a section of hair and smiling for the camera, captioned, “She curls.”

@Notfamous808 subsequently responded to these videos in a TikTok, acknowledging that Rasmussen does perform those services — but highlighted that “the issue is she does one curl and then leaves.”

The situation escalated further when Rasmussen shared a picture of a T-shirt emblazoned with the words, “Hair in 4k,” indicating that “merch [is] coming soon,” according to The Cut. @Notfamous808, in turn, reacted to this apparel in a TikTok, exclaiming, “That is truly unbelievable. Oh my goodness, what have I done?” The content creator then launched her own line of merchandise, which included a sweatshirt featuring the message, “Kindness Is Worth More Than 4K.”

What Have Other Noteworthy Figures Said About the Hair by Chrissy Dispute?

Several content creators and public figures have weighed in on the Hair by Chrissy incident. Former Bachelorette Katie Thurston, for instance, noted that $4,000 for hair “seems like a significant amount of money” but questioned whether the cost was influenced by current inflation.

“I have a certain feeling about the demographic of her clientele, who appear, at least online, to be quite young and possibly being exploited,” Thurston asserted in a TikTok, adding in her caption, “Can we discuss the #hairbychrissy situation? Is $4k excessive for hair? Am I simply ‘too old’ to comprehend that this is precisely what individuals in their twenties are prepared to spend?”
