West Virginia Teen Dies by Suicide Following Online Sextortion Attack

A 15-year-old boy from West Virginia tragically died following what authorities describe as an online sextortion scheme.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office reported that Bryce Tate, a sophomore attending Nitro High School, took his own life on November 6, just hours after falling victim to online perpetrators.

Bryce's father, Adam Tate, informed The New York Post that his son initially thought he was corresponding with “a local 17-year-old girl.” Adam claimed the individual "gained [Bryce's] confidence to the point where he genuinely believed this person was from the immediate area," noting that the scammer possessed knowledge of Bryce's workout location, social circle, and school affiliation.

The predatory scheme involved sending Bryce explicit images of a young girl and requesting similar photos from him.

According to the Post, the perpetrators then demanded $500 from the adolescent, threatening to disseminate the pictures to his relatives and social contacts if he refused; Bryce, however, only had $30 available.

Just twenty minutes prior to his death, Bryce received roughly 120 communications from the individuals involved in the scam.

The local sheriff’s office is conducting an investigation into the sextortion attempt, with the goal of bringing criminal charges against those responsible. Sextortion is categorized as an online form of exploitation where perpetrators masquerade as teenagers, deceiving victims into sharing compromising or intimate photos through social media platforms. The aggressor subsequently exploits these images by issuing demands to the victim, threatening to release the pictures publicly if the demands are not fulfilled.

On the evening of November 6, emergency calls to 911 directed deputies to Bryce's family residence in Cross Lanes, where they discovered his body. Following this, investigators submitted Bryce's mobile device to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Digital Forensic Lab for detailed examination, revealing that the teenager had been the victim of an internet-based sextortion plot.

The FBI's data indicates that sextortion schemes frequently involve demands for monetary ransom, and adults fall prey to these tactics nearly as often as adolescents.

Due to the electronic nature of the offense, the FBI in Pittsburgh has joined the investigation.

“This goes beyond mere manipulation; it's a calculated attack on vulnerable individuals, exploiting confidence and terror to provoke irreversible, tragic outcomes before family members can step in,” Adam shared with WSAZ. “I see this as the murder of my innocent child. These predators, hiding in plain sight, exploit weaknesses with complete disregard for consequences.”

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported 26,718 cases of financial sextortion in 2023, representing a significant increase from the 10,731 reports filed in 2022.

Adam mentioned meeting with West Virginia legislators to advocate for “Bryce’s Law,” a proposed anti-cyberbullying measure designed to increase the penalties for these offenses when they result in a fatality.
