Woody Allen Remembers Annie Hall Star Diane Keaton With Emotional Tribute
Woody Allen has issued a statement after the passing of his Annie Hall costar, Diane Keaton.
“While ‘most unique’ is grammatically imprecise, all linguistic conventions, and perhaps other norms, become irrelevant when discussing Diane Keaton. Her captivating face and infectious laughter brightened every room she graced, unlike anyone the world has ever known or is likely to encounter again,” the 89-year-old Allen expressed in an emotional tribute released by The Free Press.
Allen recounted his first encounter with Keaton during their collaboration on 1969’s Play It Again, Sam, mentioning their shared “shyness.” Their first personal interaction involved sharing a meal during a rehearsal.
“That marked our initial intimate interaction,” he stated. “The outcome was that her charm, beauty, and magical presence were so profound, I doubted my own rationality. I wondered: Is it possible to fall in love this rapidly?”
Over time, Keaton evolved into Allen’s reliable confidante, with her assessment of his projects holding the utmost importance for him. “I never bothered with any critique of my films; only Keaton’s thoughts mattered,” he penned. “Her approval signified an artistic triumph for the movie. If her reaction was lukewarm, I aimed to incorporate her feedback to revise and achieve a result she found more favorable.”
Reports indicate Diane Keaton's well-being "deteriorated quite rapidly" over recent months.
Allen suggested that “only a divine power and psychoanalysis could possibly discern” why their romantic partnership didn't endure. He affectionately described Keaton as “a beautiful rustic,” commending her talent in acting and her dedication to directing, alongside her authentic California upbringing.
“Just recently, Diane Keaton was still a part of our world,” Allen proceeded. “Now she is gone from it. Consequently, the world feels more somber. Yet, her films remain. And her wonderful laughter still resonates in my memory.”
On Saturday, October 11, it was announced that Keaton passed away at 79 years old in California. A family representative informed People that her relatives, including her two grown children, wished for solitude, and no additional information concerning her demise was provided.
Prior to her passing, Keaton and Allen collaborated often, with their most iconic joint effort being the 1977 movie Annie Hall. Allen played Alvy Singer, and Keaton portrayed the lead role, a part Allen crafted expressly for her. The film secured four Academy Awards, one of which was Best Actress for Keaton.
Diane Keaton's Iconic Performances: From 'The Godfather' to Other Classics
Over their decades in the entertainment industry, the two remained tightly connected. In a 2017 conversation with People, Keaton spoke of Allen as one of her “numerous affections,” reminiscing about their short romantic liaison in the 1970s.
“He is incredibly funny, and I truly cherished him,” she remarked then, also mentioning that she would dine with Allen and his spouse, Soon-Yi Previn, during her trips to New York. “I always cover the bill; that’s how giving I am,” she playfully added.
During the same year, Allen seldom appeared publicly but made an exception to offer heartfelt praise for Keaton as she received recognition at the 45th Annual AFI Life Achievement Award event.
“From the instant I encountered her, she became an enormous source of inspiration for me,” Allen declared at the gathering. “A significant portion of my life’s achievements is undoubtedly attributable to her. Experiencing existence through her perspective. She is genuinely remarkable. This is an individual who excels in all her endeavors.”
During 2018, Keaton staunchly supported Allen during the Time’s Up and #MeToo campaigns, as allegations of child molestation from his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, garnered increased attention.
“Woody Allen remains my friend, and I maintain my faith in his account,” Keaton posted on Twitter in 2018, urging online readers to re-examine Allen’s 1992 60 Minutes segment concerning the claims.
Dylan was seven years of age when these charges initially emerged in the early 1990s, at a time when Allen and his former partner, Mia Farrow, were engaged in a custody battle for their offspring. (The ex-couple separated in 1992 after over ten years.) Allen has consistently refuted any impropriety with Dylan, asserting in a 2018 declaration that Dylan was “instructed by her enraged mother to recount this narrative amidst a bitter separation.”
A Look into Diane Keaton's Last Years Prior to Her Passing at 79
Several years earlier, Keaton appeared on stage at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her enduring friend and professional partner.
“It’s somewhat challenging for me to fully grasp that 179 of the globe’s most enthralling actresses have featured in Woody Allen’s movies,” she commented. “And there’s a specific cause for this. That cause being, they desired to. They wished to because the female characters in Woody’s works cannot be pigeonholed. They face adversity, they feel affection, they experience breakdowns, they assert control, they possess imperfections. Indeed, they represent the defining characteristic of Woody’s oeuvre. Yet, what’s even more striking is that these memorable figures are exclusively unified by their origin in Woody Allen’s imagination.”
She then cited Allen, who once remarked, “A positive aspect of writing or any artistic pursuit is that if the creation is authentic, it simply endures. Whether it gains acclaim or faces dismissal, none of that holds true significance, as ultimately, the creation will persist or fade based on its inherent quality. … As I’ve often stated, instead of being remembered in the affections and thoughts of humanity, I prefer to continue existing in my own dwelling.”
Bringing her address to a close, Keaton quipped that if Allen had been present, he would have declared it was time to “bring out the hook and remove her from the blasted stage.”
