Zach Bryan's Triumphs and Tumults: A Look at the Controversial Country Star
Zach Bryan has encountered several public disputes since achieving widespread fame with his album American Heartbreak.
Bryan cultivated a fanbase after he started releasing his own music online in 2017. He launched two albums prior to 2022's American Heartbreak, his debut record with a major label, which propelled him to the summit of the charts. Despite his nearly instantaneous triumph, Bryan has sought to distinguish himself from the country music genre.
"I don't aspire to be a country musician. Everyone labels me as one. I aim to be a songwriter, and you are inherently a songwriter," he expressed during a discussion with Bruce Springsteen published by Rolling Stone in October 2024. "No one refers to Bruce Springsteen — forgive me for using your name directly — but no one calls Bruce Springsteen a damn rock musician, which you are, but you're also an indie musician, you're also a country musician. You embody all these facets in one person. And that's the essence of songwriting."
Beyond captivating listeners with his tunes — Bryan released six albums and three EPs from 2019 to 2024 — the songwriter has fans engrossed in his private affairs. In October 2024, he declared his separation from Brianna "Chickenfry" LaPaglia after more than a year of their relationship — and LaPaglia subsequently stated she was "blindsided."
Singer Zach Bryan's Dating History
"I've been in tears for, like, five consecutive days," she recounted in a YouTube video after news of their separation emerged. "I'm at a point where it's, like, how can you devote everything to someone and, like, love them so unconditionally through situations you shouldn't."
In his own statement, Bryan acknowledged, "I've endured an incredibly difficult year personally and struggled with some quite severe issues. I believed it would be beneficial for both of us to pursue separate paths. I am not flawless and never will be."

Initial Recordings and Widespread Recognition
Bryan commenced his journey on YouTube in 2017, uploading videos of himself singing. Among the initial tracks he shared were "God Speed," a song that appeared on his inaugural album, and "Heading South," which rapidly became a viral sensation.
Bryan's first album, DeAnn, was released in August 2019 and dedicated to his late mother, who passed away three years prior. He performed his first live concert in the autumn of 2019 in Oregon before launching his second album, Elisabeth, in May 2020. The record features some of Bryan's most prominent hits, including "Heading South" and "Revival."
His first two albums were succeeded by the 2020 EP Quiet, Heavy Dreams. Bryan then made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry in April 2021, later securing a contract with Warner Records.
Military Departure and Marital Dissolution
Following the tradition of many of his family members, Bryan joined the U.S. Navy at 17 years old, utilizing his spare time during service to compose music. Bryan announced in October 2021 that he had received an honorable discharge from the Navy shortly before commencing his Ain't for Tamin' Tour.
"If it were my choice, I would never leave the world's finest Navy, but here I am, and they kindly honorably discharged me to go perform music," he posted on social media at the time.
His exit from the military coincided with his divorce from Rose Madden. The former couple exchanged vows in July 2020 and ended their marriage one year later. (His album Elisabeth was named after Madden.)
'American Heartbreak' Achieves Prominence
Bryan's third album and initial major label release, American Heartbreak, came out in May 2022, a month after his single "Something in the Orange" became a massive hit. The track reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of his most triumphant to date with over 1 billion streams on Spotify.
Comprising 34 tracks, American Heartbreak underscored Bryan's talent for narrative songwriting. The album includes beloved songs such as "Heavy Eyes," "From Austin," "The Good I'll Do" and "Open the Gate."
Bryan continued to put out music throughout 2022, releasing the EP Summertime Blues and achieving another success with the song "Oklahoma Smokeshow." His single "Burn, Burn, Burn" was released in September 2022, followed by the album All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster, a live recording of his November 2022 concert at Colorado's renowned Red Rocks Amphitheatre. (Bryan declined to sell tickets for his 2023 tour via Ticketmaster, emphasizing in a statement that "working class individuals should still be able to afford tickets to shows." His 2024 tour was sold through Ticketmaster, with Bryan admitting that "one person can't alter the entire system.")
Deb Peifer Relationship and Separation
Following his divorce, Bryan moved on with Peifer. The pair commemorated their one-year anniversary in January 2023 but ended their relationship four months later.
"For clarity and with respect, I am informing everyone that Debra and I parted ways about a week and a half ago," Bryan tweeted in May 2023. "Our separation is mutual, we are left with many cherished memories and good times. I earnestly request that everyone respects her and my privacy during this difficult period."
Shortly before announcing his breakup from Peifer, Bryan encountered LaPaglia at the 2023 ACM Awards. The Barstool Sports personality later made an unexpected appearance on stage during one of Bryan's June 2023 concerts at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, performing "Revival" with several other celebrity guests. A month later, LaPaglia confirmed their romance.
"It's enjoyable, it's casual, and yes, I just wanted to address it because the entire internet is going f—ing wild and people are doing s—," she stated on her "PlanBri Uncut" podcast. "And yeah, that's truly it. Just spending time together, having some fun."
Grammy Awards and Industry Acclaim
In 2023, Bryan received his initial Grammy nomination in the Best Country Solo Performance category for "Something in the Orange" but was surpassed by Willie Nelson's "Live Forever." He was subsequently nominated for Best Country Album for 2024's Zach Bryan. His collaboration with Kacey Musgraves, "I Remember Everything," was also nominated that year for Best Country Song and Best Country Duo/Group Performance, ultimately winning the latter.
Bryan has also secured four Billboard Music Awards, one Academy of Country Music Award and one People's Choice Country Award, earning nominations at the CMT Music Awards, Country Music Association Awards and People's Choice Awards.
Zach Bryan and Brianna ‘Chickenfry’ LaPaglia’s Relationship Timeline
Alongside his critical and popular achievements, Bryan has earned the admiration of his contemporaries. Jelly Roll referred to Bryan as "the greatest of this generation" via X in October 2024, and 50 Cent previously lauded the songwriter as "the best new everything in country music."
John Mayer, who is featured on Bryan's album The Great American Bar Scene, expressed profound praise for Bryan after their collaboration was released in July 2024. "I always knew this song Zach wrote was special. I had no idea how beautiful, powerful and deep an album it would be a part of. I'm stunned," Mayer tweeted. "I'm blessed to have been able to fulfill my dreams of making music. What I never saw coming: to be asked to play with an artist as deeply tapped in as @zachlanebryan is. Thank you for inviting me into your dream-coming-true."
Bryan has also collaborated with Springsteen, Maggie Rogers, Noah Kahan, Bon Iver, The War and Treaty and others.
Arrest and Social Media Incidents
Bryan garnered attention in September 2023 when he was apprehended in Oklahoma on a charge of obstruction of investigation. He was released on bail soon after his arrest and subsequently addressed the event via social media.
"Today I had an encounter with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Emotions got the better of me, and I spoke out of turn with the things I said," he wrote at the time. "I support law enforcement as much as anyone can; I was simply frustrated in the moment, it was uncharacteristic of me, and I apologize. They took me to jail, and a mug shot of me is circulating."
In a separate post, Bryan recognized that the authorities "didn't show favoritism" due to his celebrity status. "I acted foolishly today, and my choices did not reflect my true self, and I just want to make that clear, and I should have been more intelligent about it," he added, asserting that he doesn't "believe [he's] above the law" but taking responsibility for "being disrespectful."
Bryan's mugshot was later utilized as the cover of Spotify's "Outlaw" playlist.
Beyond legal issues, Bryan has caused a stir with his social media activity. In September 2024, Bryan was criticized for tweeting "Kanye > Taylor… Who's with me" but promptly retracted his comments.
"Guys, I adore Taylor," Bryan wrote. "[I] was listening to TTPD last night, and 'Thank You Aimee' came on, and I drunkenly tweeted that about Kanye. If anyone took it seriously, please know I love both artists immensely and believe we are in a truly beautiful era of music."
In a subsequent declaration, Bryan apologized "to any Taylor fans I upset or disappointed," revealing that he was "experiencing a tough period" and "projecting a little" when he composed his initial post. "Don't drink and tweet. Don't drink and tweet!!" he concluded.
Bryan has been known to confront detractors over the years, previously condemning "pieces of trash" online who alleged, "Zach Bryan is what happens when you don't discipline your kids."
"Never insult my parents, never insult anyone's parents," he wrote in an August 2024 Instagram Story.
Brianna Chickenfry Separation
Bryan announced in October 2024 that he and LaPaglia had ended their relationship after more than a year of dating. "Addressing something: Brianna and I have parted ways with each other [sic] and I respect and love her with every fiber of my being," he wrote via his Instagram Story. "She has loved me unconditionally for a very long time, and for that I'll always be grateful."
Bryan added, "I've endured an incredibly difficult year personally and struggled with some pretty severe issues. I believed it would be beneficial for both of us to pursue separate paths. I am not flawless and never will be. … With everything I am, and to anyone I let down, I am sorry. I strive to do my best in everything. I failed people who love me and primarily myself."
LaPaglia subsequently shared in her own Instagram Story statement that she was "blindsided" by the breakup and would be withdrawing from social media in order "to heal privately." Later that day, she discussed the separation in a YouTube video.
"How can you, like, give every part of yourself to someone and then, like, be discarded in a few days?" she remarked. "It's truly, truly heartbreaking, and I don't wish to discuss details right now."
Altercation With Gavin Adcock
Bryan and fellow country singer Adcock appeared to engage in a heated dispute during the Born & Raised Festival in Oklahoma in September 2025.
“Hey, do you want to fight like a man? Wanna open the gates?” Bryan challenged Adcock from across a barbed wire fence in viral social media footage. “Do you want me to toss a beer or something?”
Bryan banged on the fence before scaling it to Adcock’s side, where he was restrained by security personnel.
Adcock shared video of the moment via Instagram and wrote, “When you receive death threats from Sack Cryin’ before you headline in his hometown. … Eat a Snickers, bro.”
Bryan has not yet publicly commented on the incident. Us Weekly sought a statement.
Adcock and Bryan’s confrontation followed a feud they had throughout the summer. Their conflict began when Adcock criticized Bryan for allegedly refusing to meet with a young fan after a concert.
“If you can’t handle criticism from a 14-year-old, why do people idolize you?” Adcock wrote via X in July. “That kid was overjoyed to meet you and spent/ his parents spent a significant amount of money to see you. He has feelings too, and you’re a ‘grown man’ nearly 30. They are the sole reason for your success.”
Bryan seemingly addressed the controversy in a now-deleted post on X.
“You’re not entitled to a picture or a greeting after someone performs for two and a half hours,” he wrote. “I went out and took pictures both night one and three. I had a third show the next day, and it was late; I needed rest.”
Adcock then reiterated his remarks during an August 2025 appearance on the “Nashville Now” podcast.
“It wasn’t about not wanting to sign autographs after a show; it’s like letting a 14-year-old kid vent, without saying, ‘Get off my d.’ You’re better than that,” Adcock said. “I think that Zach Bryan wears a significant mask in his daily life, and sometimes he can’t help but tear it off and reveal his true nature. I don’t know if Zach Bryan’s truly that great of a person.”
