90 Years of Innovation: German Fashion Icon Eberhard Bezner Celebrates Milestone Birthday

Eberhard Bezner, the long-standing managing director and current co-owner of Olymp Bezner KG, and co-founder of the Olymp Bezner Foundation, will celebrate his 90th birthday on December 31st. A prominent figure in the German fashion industry, Bezner is credited with driving numerous innovations in modern shirt-making, establishing the strong market position Olymp enjoys today.

Born on December 31, 1935, in Stuttgart, Württemberg, Eberhard Bezner was the only child of Eugen Bezner, the founder of the company, and his wife, Wilma (née Klaus). He spent his formative years in Bietigheim and Ingersheim, located in the Ludwigsburg district. Following his schooling in Bietigheim in 1950, he embarked on a formal apprenticeship as a textiles and retail merchant with a textile wholesaler in Ludwigsburg.

In September 1953, Bezner joined his parents’ company as a junior employee. However, his leadership journey began abruptly in January 1960 with the sudden passing of his father. At just 24 years old, he unexpectedly assumed responsibility for the rapidly expanding, medium-sized shirt manufacturer. He dedicated himself to this role as managing partner for decades, ultimately transitioning leadership to his son, Mark Bezner, who now successfully leads the internationally recognized family business as its third-generation head.

A key aspect of Bezner’s entrepreneurial vision was his early recognition, in the late 1960s, of the challenges facing domestic textile production in Germany. A shortage of skilled labor was becoming increasingly apparent, as the textile and clothing industry in the Middle Neckar region struggled to compete with sectors like mechanical engineering and automotive for qualified workers. Recognizing this, Bezner proactively sought alternative production locations abroad, a crucial step in preserving the company and safeguarding German jobs.

Beyond his business acumen, Bezner demonstrated a commitment to public service, serving as a municipal councillor in his hometown of Bietigheim for decades. From 1968 to 2004, he was a long-serving member of the CDU group on the Bietigheim-Bissingen city council and also served as the honorary deputy to Lord Mayor Manfred List (CDU). His contributions to the community as a citizen, patron, sponsor, and elected official have been recognized with the Badge of Honour of the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Cross of Merit on ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2013, the Baden-Baden Economic Forum further honoured him for his life’s work as a leading figure in the German shirt industry and as a shareholder of OLYMP.

Driven by a philanthropic spirit and the belief that “It is far more blessed to give than to receive,” Eberhard Bezner has been actively involved in charitable humanitarian projects. In 2008, alongside his son, Mark Bezner, and daughter, Birgit Bezner-Fischer, he established the Olymp Bezner Foundation with a private endowment of one million euros. The foundation has since dedicated itself to supporting the education, health, and welfare of children and young people worldwide.

Bezner’s entrepreneurial ventures extend beyond the fashion industry. In 2010, he opened “EBERHARDS,” a stylish hotel and restaurant now managed by his grandson, Bastian Fischer. Located in a prime city-centre location in Bietigheim-Bissingen, beside the iconic railway viaduct and overlooking the River Enz, EBERHARDS offers high-quality accommodation and culinary experiences focused on regional cuisine.

A passionate advocate for the arts, Bezner initiated the “Jazz im OLYMP” festival in 2001. Held annually on the company premises, the festival has become a cultural highlight in the Stuttgart region, attracting numerous international music groups, performers, and bands. He is also a dedicated sports enthusiast and has been a long-time supporter of local sports clubs in Bietigheim-Bissingen.
