British Land Searches for New CEO After Simon Carter’s Strategic Move

British Land, a leading UK property company, is initiating a search for a new Chief Executive Officer following the announcement of Simon Carter’s departure. Carter, who has served as CEO since 2020, will be leaving the firm after an impressive 18-year association to take the helm at European logistics properties firm P3 Logistics Parks.

Carter’s five-year tenure as CEO was marked by a successful strategic shift towards a greater focus on retail parks, a move that has demonstrably benefitted the company. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he held the position of Chief Financial Officer at British Land, returning to the company in 2018 after previous roles at Quintain Estates & Development and Logicor.

His initial period with British Land began in 2004, where he progressed through various key roles encompassing Strategy, Corporate Finance, and Treasury. This extensive internal experience, combined with his external perspectives gained at other prominent property firms, proved invaluable during his leadership.

William Rucker, Chairman of British Land, expressed gratitude for Carter’s contributions, stating he had “achieved a huge amount” during his time with the company. Rucker highlighted Carter’s success in building a strong management team and establishing a leading position in both London office campuses and retail parks.

Carter himself reflected on his time at British Land, describing it as a “privilege” and acknowledging the “contrarian calls” made post-pandemic which have positioned the business for sustained success. He emphasized the strong rental growth currently being experienced in supply-constrained markets within both the London campus and retail park sectors.

The departure will be managed with a 12-month notice period, providing British Land with ample time to conduct a thorough search for a suitable replacement and ensure a smooth transition of leadership. This extended timeframe mitigates any immediate disruption to the company’s ongoing strategy and operations.
