Next Eyes Russell & Bromley Brand, Threatening Store Closures

Next, the British retail giant, is reportedly intensifying its pursuit of Russell & Bromley, the premium footwear chain, with developments suggesting a potential shift in strategy towards acquiring the brand’s intellectual property (IPR) rather than the entire business. Recent reports indicate Next has partnered with Retail Realisation, a specialist in stock clearance and restructuring, fueling speculation that Russell & Bromley’s physical stores could face closure.

The collaboration with Retail Realisation strongly suggests Next’s primary interest lies in securing the Russell & Bromley brand itself, rather than absorbing its existing store network and inventory. Retail Realisation has ties to Modella Capital, the firm behind TOFS and Claire’s UK, both of which are facing potential administration proceedings, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.

While Next is a frontrunner, it isn’t the sole bidder. Interpath, the advisory firm handling the sale process for Russell & Bromley, is currently evaluating multiple proposals. This indicates a competitive landscape for the acquisition, despite Next’s apparent willingness to move aggressively.

Further demonstrating its appetite for expansion through acquisition, Next is also reportedly exploring a takeover of LK Bennett, another prominent UK footwear brand currently experiencing financial difficulties. This dual pursuit highlights Next’s strategic focus on bolstering its presence in the footwear market.

Industry sources cited by Sky News emphasize that the partnership between Next and Retail Realisation underscores the company’s focus on the Russell & Bromley brand’s value, rather than its brick-and-mortar operations or current stock levels. This implies a potential restructuring of Russell & Bromley under Next’s ownership, potentially involving a significant reduction in its physical footprint.

Currently, Russell & Bromley operates 37 stores across the UK and employs over 450 individuals. The company remains family-owned, currently led by Andrew Bromley, a fifth-generation member of the founding family, and features Billie Piper as a brand ambassador. Should Next acquire only the IPR, existing stores would lose the right to trade under the Russell & Bromley name.

As of now, none of the parties involved – Next, Russell & Bromley, Retail Realisation, or Interpath – have issued official comments regarding the ongoing negotiations or potential acquisition.
