Adena Brands reports strong turnaround returning to profitability amid high street challenges

Adena Brands, the parent company behind well-known high street retailers Monsoon, Accessorize, and East, has announced its latest annual results, revealing a significant turnaround in its trading performance. The financial year ending in August saw the group return to profitability, a notable achievement given the persistent challenges faced by the UK high street, coupled with escalating operational costs and an increase in employers' National Insurance contributions.

The company's financial health showed marked improvement across key metrics. Sales climbed by 3.7% to reach £212.2 million. More strikingly, EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortisation) saw a substantial rise of £10.4 million, settling at £8 million. This represents a significant swing from a loss of £2.4 million recorded in the previous year to a healthy profit. The pre-tax profit picture also brightened considerably, moving from a loss of £7.5 million a year earlier to a positive £1 million this time around.

Beyond the headline profit figures, Adena Brands significantly strengthened its financial foundation. Cash reserves increased to £16.7 million from £14.9 million by year-end, and the company proudly reported finishing the year entirely debt-free. For the wider group, which includes Adena Brands Ltd and its affiliated Middle East ventures, consolidated sales reached £227.8 million, with an EBITDA of £9.1 million and a cash position of £17.9 million.

Delving into the performance of individual segments, the core Accessorize retail business demonstrated consistent strength, achieving solid growth through positive like-for-like sales and successful new store openings. Concurrently, Monsoon's digital operations made considerable strides, benefiting from more productive digital marketing investments and robust growth within third-party marketplaces.

Throughout the year, the group also proactively addressed several underperforming areas, which contributed to an improved retail profitability for Monsoon. Encouragingly, Monsoon childrenswear returned to growth, and the international business registered progress following recent strategic adjustments implemented in key markets like Italy and Saudi Arabia. While specific figures for Accessorize and Monsoon's individual performances were not disclosed, nor any detailed information regarding East, the overall narrative points to targeted improvements.

Investment remained a core focus, with Adena Brands continuing to channel resources into both its physical store estate and digital infrastructure. The company opened 14 new stores across the UK and refitted eight existing locations, meaning that the vast majority of its store portfolio has now undergone refurbishment within the last five years. Furthermore, a comprehensive technology upgrade was completed, migrating systems to the cloud, integrating new commercial tools, and fortifying cyber security measures.

CEO Nick Stowe described the results as "an encouraging performance," especially considering the numerous headwinds encountered, including significant cost pressures and increased taxation. He attributed this success directly to the strategic investment programme in stores and systems pursued over the past five years, alongside the unwavering dedication and hard work of his colleagues.
