AI Glasses Power EssilorLuxottica's Stellar Q3 Beats Expectations

EssilorLuxottica SA recently announced a robust third-quarter performance, with revenues significantly exceeding analysts' expectations, largely propelled by the burgeoning success of its latest artificial intelligence (AI) glasses developed in partnership with Meta Platforms Inc. The world's largest eyewear group reported an impressive 11.7% increase in sales at constant exchange rates, reaching €6.87 billion ($8.02 billion). This figure comfortably surpassed the average analyst estimate of 8.5% growth, as tracked by Bloomberg.

The company highlighted "exponential growth" in its wearable technology segment, underscoring the increasing momentum of the category. Investors have been keenly observing the high-profile collaboration between EssilorLuxottica and Meta, looking for tangible signs that it can meet ambitious expectations. The release of the new Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses in September proved instrumental, with AI glasses emerging as a "key growth driver" across EssilorLuxottica's company-owned retail outlets, including Sunglass Hut.

Chairman and CEO Francesco Milleri attributed the strong sales performance to "booming wearables and strong momentum across vision care and sunglasses." He further expressed confidence in the company's trajectory, stating that EssilorLuxottica enters the fourth quarter with "strong momentum and a clear ambition to drive lasting transformation" within the industry.

EssilorLuxottica has strategically intensified its focus on wearables and medical technology to solidify its leadership in the evolving eyewear landscape. A notable contributor to results within the professional solutions division was myopia management, an innovative category featuring specialized lenses designed to limit the progression of short-sightedness, addressing a significant and growing global eye health concern.

Reinforcing its commitment to innovation and market dominance, EssilorLuxottica also announced the acquisition of RetinAI, a company renowned for its expertise in artificial intelligence and data management within the eyecare sector. This deal follows a series of other strategic acquisitions made this year, including a unit of South Korea’s PUcore Co., which specializes in developing monomers used in contact lenses, and Optegra, a prominent group operating over 70 eye hospitals and diagnostic facilities across Europe.

Looking ahead, the financial impact of the Meta collaboration is projected to be substantial. While initial estimates placed revenue generation at €365 million for EssilorLuxottica in 2024, the most optimistic projections from Barclays suggest this could approach €800 million this year and potentially soar past €6 billion by 2030. Analysts at Barclays foresee a significant expansion in the smart glasses market, with industry sales potentially growing from approximately 3 million units annually to 60 million by 2035.

In response to these positive developments, EssilorLuxottica shares saw a 2.4% advance in Paris on Thursday prior to the results announcement. The company's stock has enjoyed a favorable year, posting a 17% gain year-to-date.
