Allbirds Sales Drop Amidst Turnaround Efforts and Revised Full Year Forecast
Allbirds, the San Francisco-based brand known for its sustainable footwear, experienced a significant downturn in its third-quarter sales, reporting $33 million, a 23 percent decrease. This decline highlights ongoing challenges as the company continues to grapple with reduced consumer demand for its products within the U.S. market and beyond.
The company attributed this sales contraction to several internal structural adjustments. These included the adverse effects of transitions involving international distributors and a strategic decision to close several retail stores, both of which impacted revenue streams during the period. Such operational shifts, while potentially beneficial long-term, created headwinds for immediate sales performance.
Despite the substantial drop in sales, Allbirds did manage to show some positive movement in its bottom line. For the three months ending September 30, the company reported a net loss of $20.3 million. This figure represents a narrowing of losses compared to the $21.2 million recorded in the third quarter of the previous year, 2024, indicating some progress in cost management or efficiency.
Joe Vernachio, CEO of Allbirds, expressed satisfaction that the third-quarter results aligned with the company's internal expectations. He specifically highlighted a "robust flow of new product introductions," many of which garnered a "strong customer response," suggesting that product innovation remains a key area of strength and potential growth for the brand.
Looking ahead to the critical holiday season, Vernachio outlined a strategy focused on re-engaging consumers. The company plans to intensify its marketing efforts with "compelling marketing content" to "capture consumer mindshare and reignite growth." A key component of this will be spotlighting gifting ideas and reinforcing Allbirds’ foundational principles of Comfort, Style, and Sustainability.
Vernachio further emphasized the company's commitment to a broader turnaround strategy. He stated that teams are dedicated to "accelerating progress" in the upcoming quarters. Concurrently, Allbirds is taking "definitive steps to further reduce costs, enhance liquidity, and pursue value-creating opportunities," indicating a comprehensive approach to financial stability and long-term viability.
In light of these developments, Allbirds has revised its financial outlook for the full year. The company now forecasts net revenue to be in the range of $161 million to $166 million, a reduction from its earlier guidance of $165 million to $180 million. This updated projection reflects the ongoing challenges and the anticipated impact of its turnaround initiatives on current year performance.
